While rumors are spreading about a Dead Space announcement happening at EA Play, fans should make sure to keep their expectations in check.

Dead Space fans have been desperate for something to be done with the IP, as it has been dormant since the Dead Space 3: Awakened DLC launched back in 2013. While the story ended on a cliffhanger, fans would likely be happy with anything from a reboot to a remaster. With no new content for the franchise in over eight years, though, it is hard to believe that Dead Space will be making a comeback.

However, while it is unlikely for the series to come back, a new Dead Space rumor does have gamers talking once again. If it were to prove true, the series would supposedly be getting revived in the near future, with the announcement coming very soon. While fans are understandably thrilled about the possibility, as a next-gen Dead Space could be terrifying, there are some major reasons to doubt that the iconic horror series will return.

The Dead Space revival rumor has been spreading due to comments made by industry insider Jeff Grubb. Proven reputable several times in the past, the GamesBeat writer teased a major announcement for the EA Play event that is taking place on July 22. Confirming that it would be an “established IP,” the news was already exciting enough on its own. However, it was another comment from Grubb that helped fans reach new levels of hype regarding the possible return of the series.

Grubb stated that fans will see it if they are “not dead first,” with the use of the word “dead” being the key part of the phrase. However, Dead Space fans should be careful not to get too hyped about this rumor. Grubb has since posted a Tweet that seems to imply guesses like Dead Space are inaccurate, indicating that the insider might be referring to something else with his comment. It could also be some lighthearted trolling or an example of gamers reading too much into things, something that has happened with many rumors in the past.

The biggest issue with the rumors of a new Dead Space game is that they are far from the only ones that have appeared. In fact, there is seemingly a new leak or rumor about Dead Space every few months, none of which have come to fruition. For example, a Dead Space writer teased fans about an announcement last year, only for the project to be completely unrelated to the beloved franchise. While it does seem like there is a lot of smoke to the fire as far as the current rumors are concerned, they are far from the only time that Dead Space fans have expected some big news.

On top of this, players should keep in mind how the series went out. Not only was Dead Space 3 viewed as a misstep for the series due to its focus on co-op and actions, but it was considered a commercial failure as well. Not meeting EA’s expectations when it comes to sales, the game did not make enough of a profit to warrant a sequel. With even Dead Space 2’s sales being considered underwhelming, it is clear that the games weren’t bringing in the audience that EA had expected. As such, the company may still be against the idea of more Dead Space, choosing to leave the necromorphs and plasma cutters in the past.

Lastly, this revival would require a new developer, as Visceral Games has been shut down for several years. With Dead Space visionary Glen Schofield now working with Striking Distance Studios on The Callisto Protocol, another Dead Space game could have a completely different tone and style. Regardless of which developer takes on the task, they would have some big shoes to fill. While it is certainly possible, there is a lot working against a Dead Space comeback. Though it would be amazing if these rumors turned out to be true, fans should remain doubtful until something is officially revealed. With so many years on the shelf and leaks that went nowhere, it is hard to be optimistic about a potential revival.

A new Dead Space game is not confirmed to be in development.
