Joel Kinnaman reveals what exactly made him nervous in terms of filming his role as Rick Flag for director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Joel Kinnaman was a bit anxious and timid when he heard the news that James Gunn was going to be taking over The Suicide Squad franchise. There could be a million reasons as to why Kinnaman would be on edge when it comes to returning to the elite squad, yet none of those possible causes are anywhere close to the real thing that made him a bit scared about working on The Suicide Squad. The film features a mix of hardcore action, but with a twist by giving the actors plenty of jokes. The fear of being not funny is what made Kinnaman nervous.

Kinnaman has done almost every genre but comedy, and the actor hasn’t had many straight-up jokes appear while reading a script. Gunn is known for his imaginative mind and fans feel that he can deliver a thickening plot with a plethora of insane stunts. The Suicide Squad's dialogue and the script are arguably equally as funny as they are thrilling. Kinnaman is no stranger to fear and being regarded as one of the most hard-working actors requires him to step out of the box.

Kinnaman recently disclosed in an interview with Vanity Fair that he believes his work ethic is so powerful because he is dedicated to further developing his career and sharpening his craft. He approaches a challenge with curiosity, devoid of ego. Kinnaman even revealed a motto that has stuck with him whenever he has to do something that is alien to him. He is patient with himself while adapting to change and tells himself that he only needs to be 10% outside of his comfort zone in order to achieve personal growth. Kinnaman also has spoken to the lack of exploration and creativity he felt in regards to working on the first Suicide Squad.

Along with his co-stars, the cast of the first Suicide Squad film had to go through strict training and workshops to perfect their characters. Although it made the cast all the more close, Kinnaman will now be able to have more say and influence when he returns to his role as Rick Flag. Comedy happens to be more welcoming when it comes to messing up a joke because failure and imperfection can be quite hilarious as well. Kinnaman may not be the funniest member of the cast when it comes to The Suicide Squad, but he seems determined to make fans laugh. Additionally, he always has the support of his co-stars to fall back on or draw inspiration from.

After filming, Kinnaman spoke about how proud he seems to be a part of The Suicide Squad. He said, “We’re all dying to have these communal experiences. I got really emotional when I saw it for the first time. I think it’s going to be really meaningful.”

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and is available for streaming on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021.
