Asmongold and Pokimane Fear the Same Fate on Twitch Following ASMR Controversy

Pokimane and Asmongold believe that the new ASMR meta on Twitch could result in a situation similar to YouTube's Adpocalypse demonetization.

Twitch had all but forgotten the hot tub meta before the new meta, ASMR, started taking over the platform in its place. Led by the same two streamers, Amouranth and Indiefoxx, the ASMR category is now filled with streamers licking a microphone with prosthetic ears on either end in exchange for subscriptions.

Amouranth and Indiefoxx were both banned for the same length of time — three days — for performing the sexual ASMR with their butts facing the camera. Many rejoiced that Twitch took some form of action, though some argue that it was a simple slap on the wrist as they've both returned to producing the same content. However, top streamers Pokimane and Asmongold separately voiced their concerns. They believe that the overt amount of sexual content on Twitch could lead to a massive number of brands pulling their ads from the site completely.

YouTube's actually had multiple events that the community refers to as the "Adpocalypse," but 2017 is the first year that it occurred and created a massive problem for all streamers with adult audiences, with or without sexual content. Many accredit a famous PewDiePie controversy for kickstarting the first Adpocalypse. At the time, the Swedish YouTuber was coming under fire for anti-semitic jokes, which resulted in Disney Maker Studios dropping him, and his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie getting cancelled.

While this doesn't pertain to solely sexually explicit content, it eventually resulted in many advertisers pulling from YouTube completely or only being shown on channels that were deemed "Family Friendly," a new focus that the site had shifted toward in 2016. This affected many creators around the site, including those whose worst offenses were swearing, such as the news YouTuber Phil DeFranco, negatively impacting their channels financially. The four Adpodcalypses have also been worsened by YouTube itself tightening policies, stripping accounts of monetization in the process.

Pokimane and Asmongold, in addition to many other major internet personalities, have reacted to the ear-licking ASMR and Amouranth's ban. They had their own opinions on the matter; for example, Asmongold believes Amouranth is being given special treatment while Pokimane's video focused on the legitimate ASMR streamers that have put time and effort into their craft only to be dominated by Indiefoxx making ear-licking noises. But both fear that, if streamers continue to bend the rules, it will result in advertisers pulling from Twitch not unlike what's occurred on YouTube multiple times since 2017.

Asmongold commented that major news outlets like Fox News or CNN could cover these recent controversies and frame them as "exposing minors" to sexual content. This, in turn, could directly impact the ad revenue that streamers receive. Similarly, Pokimane called the issue a "time bomb," believing the advertisers to be up in arms. She fears that many streamers could be labeled as "mature" whether or not they participate in sexual streams. Down the line, Pokimane explained, Twitch could become a family-friendly space geared towards kids. But how possible is it that an Adpocalypse will occur?

Amouranth was demonetized at the peak of the hot tub meta, and Twitch was met with severe backlash for taking this course of action. The main problem, many felt, was that Twitch offered no forewarning and later blamed it on brands, saying that Amouranth's videos were flagged at the advertisers' requests. Because brands decide where and when their ads appear, this could potentially continue to occur should they become displeased with Twitch's level of sexual content.

Should companies begin pulling their ads from the platform, Twitch could take a similar trajectory to YouTube by strictly enforcing policies and pulling monetization where it deems necessary, because an Adpocalypse would also impact the Amazon-owned site financially in addition to its content creators.
