The Chest of Sorrows is a pretty rare treasure to find in Sea of Thieves but, once found, players may be curious as to what the item can be used for.

Sea of Thieves players definitely have their hands full right about now. A couple of days ago was the official release of the highly-anticipated crossover between Sea of Thieves and Pirates of the Caribbean, titled A Pirate's Life. The update introduces a host of new challenges, locations, and best of all, features a cameo from the notorious Captain Jack Sparrow.

Even before Pirates of the Caribbean arrived in Sea of Thieves, the bombastic pirate adventure game was known for its own variety of original quests, creatures, and treasure chests. One of these is known among players as the Chest of Sorrows. The Chest is somewhat rare and unique, spawning randomly on islands and underwater. It can also spawn randomly as part of any voyage. As its name suggests, at random intervals, the chest emits deep, soft sobbing noises and begins "crying" - that is, it begins spewing water from the eyes of its face and from under its lid.

As Sea of Thieves players have probably figured out by now, if this happens while the Chest of Sorrows is on a ship, things can get dicey fast. Playing music won't soothe it, and using a docked rowboat doesn't bypass the effects. In other words, there's no easy way to keep the Chest from flooding a ship, and worst-case scenario, the Chest will only drag it down into the watery depths.

If looking to get some use out of the Chest of Sorrows, Sea of Thieves players need to be ready to prevent their ships from sinking. Along with having some buckets on hand, keeping the Chest nearby above deck means crewmembers can keep an ear out for its signature wail and purge water as needed. A good way to completely negate the effects of the Chest is to have a crew member carry it on the side ladders.

In combat, the Chest of Sorrows can be a pretty annoying item for an enemy ship. The Chest will sink whatever ship it's on, meaning a clever enough crewmate could easily sneak the Chest aboard an enemy ship. Of course, using any type of cannonball in Sea of Thieves will make the process far easier, though used effectively, the Chest can sink ships without firing a single shot. This works well especially when it comes to Skeleton Ships since they can't get rid of them.

On the other hand, the Chest of Sorrows can actually be sold for a decent amount of gold. At its maximum Emissary Value, the Chest can easily go for 20k gold, meaning it would be well worth the effort. Even without an Emissary, the Chest can be sold for a minimum of 3k gold. They won't grant Sea of Thieves players Ancient Coins, but selling enough of these earns players some pretty neat commendations further down the line.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
