The Red Dead Redemption games--particularly Red Dead Redemption 2--are well-known for their incredibly detailed open worlds, but their charismatic and deeply flawed cast of characters is what truly makes the series shine. Fans have been hoping to see the series influence new westerns, but one Red Dead Redemption 2 fan has gone a step further and created fanart of actor David Harbour dressed as Bill Williamson.
Red Dead Redemption fans have previously created at least one fan cast for a Red Dead Redemption movie that positions Josh Brolin in the role of Arthur. This seems like a solid choice, as Josh Brolin has previous experience acting in gritty westerns like True Grit and No Country For Old Men, but David Harbour is also a good option to join the cast. After all, one of his most popular roles is Chief Jim Hopper from the Netflix special Stranger Things, a tough but self-destructive man whose character arc has more than a little in common with the members of the Van der Linde gang.

It has been argued that Red Dead Redemption should be the model for upcoming western movies. While it remains to be seen exactly how much influence the Red Dead Redemption games will have on the western genre going forward, they've certainly inspired fans to think about how they could be translated to film. In this fanart, Redditor u/daking2007 shows a picture of David Harbour alongside a picture of Bill Williamson taken straight from Red Dead Redemption 2. The Redditor has used both these images to create a fanart of the actor in costume as Bill. The result is quite fitting.
Not only do Hopper's grim facial expressions fit right into the grim world of Red Dead Redemption, Harbour looks right at home in Bill's greasy shirt and battered hat. The actor's striking blue eyes lend his face a hawklike sharpness, and while his beard is a bit neater than Bill's, that would be easy enough for Hollywood stylists to deal with. For the most part, the image has been warmly received on Reddit, though one poster expressed a certainty that David Harbour's face is too kind to properly portray the hot-headed bandit. It's possible that Red Dead Redemption games simply have darker graphics, as even Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi look pretty grim when recreated in Red Dead Online.
U/daking2007 states in the comments that they have ideas for a similar fan cast of John Marston, the protagonist of the original Red Dead Redemption game. It would be interesting to see similar edits made for other major players in the Red Dead Redemption franchise such as Arthur Morgan, Dutch van der Linde, and Hosea Matthews. The troubled bond between Arthur and Dutch is especially fertile ground for fan works, but it's the complex relationships between these men, their families, their enemies, and their victims that make Red Dead Redemption a truly great series.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
