These mods can be a great way to bring a bunch more laughter into the gameplay of Friday Night Funkin'.

Friday Night Funkin’, as a wildly popular free-to-play game, has spawned quite the active community after surging onto the Newgrounds scene in late 2020. From lovingly rendered fan animations to stupidly hilarious memes, the enthusiastic engagement of FNF’s fanbase has been one of the primary reasons for the game’s surging popularity (just look at the stunning success of the developer’s Kickstarter for proof).

Nowhere is this devotion clearer than in the mods cooked up by the community. With hundreds of mods available some have chosen to take on a noble goal: getting a quick laugh out of fellow fans. For the fan just beginning to explore the modding scene, some of the most comical creations should not be missed.

10 Friday Night Funkin, But Bad: So Bad It's Good

It’s a common problem: sometimes, when enjoying a game, a player stops and thinks, “Wouldn’t this be so much better… if it were worse?” Don't worry, a mod is here to deliver a product that no one asked for and everyone needed; every aspect of the game has been downgraded to a comical low.

The art style has been overhauled and ‘remastered’, each rapper’s voice has been garbled, and even the directional arrows have been given a messy makeover. Every feature has been worsened, and the experience is all the better for it.

For the player looking for an uproarious downgrade, Friday Night Funkin, But Bad is available to download here.

9 Hatsune Miku Mod: An Encore Performance

Yes, that Hatsune Miku. This vocaloid idol is a suprising favorite amongst the FNF modding community (and the idol herself is no stranger to video game appearances); there seems to be a good deal of overlap between rhythm game enthusiasts and enjoyment of other virtual musical sensations.

Of course, there is a bit of a difference between appreciating the music of vocaloid idol, and designing an entire stage of a rhythm game around beating her in a multi-stage rap battle. But sometimes a modder just wants to see a virtual rapper and a virtual idol duke it out, and the modding scene is all the better for it.

For vocaloid fans or those just looking for an amusing genre-appropriate opponent, The Hatsune Miku Mod can be downloaded here.

8 Golf Minigame: Certainly Up to Par

So, Friday Night Funkin’ may be a fantastic rhythm game. But it is a lousy golf simulator — in fact, there is no trace of golf in the game whatsoever! One of the developers really dropped the ball on that one. Fortunately, the Golf Minigame mod seeks to fix this glaring oversight and presents the player with an entirely new stage, where the player can seek to impress with their rapping and putting skills.

Just in case that wasn’t enough, there is a guest appearance from vocaloid sensation Miku. FNF fans really do love that idol. For the player looking for the brave new golfing frontier of rhythm games, the mod is available here to download.

7 Friday Night Gunnin’: Shooting to Impress

Sometimes a boy needs to rap battle against his girlfriend’s father in order to impress them. And sometimes he just gets shot at. Friday Night Gunnin’ seeks the best of both worlds. The modder behind this amusing redesign has reskinned and reorchestrated an early stage of the game to feature an absurd gunfight between the boyfriend and Daddy Dearest (wielding his brand-new bulletproof Dad-Shield).

With handguns blasting to the beat, entirely redesigned character sprites, and a brand-new stage backdrop, the mod is available here for when rap battling just isn’t doing the trick.

6 High Effort Ugh 2.0 (feat. Tankman): Rolling Out the Hit(s?)

Yes, Week 7 may have been extremely popular. Sure, it might have been “crash the site on launch day” popular. But surely no one was so enthralled that they only want to play only one song from that one week? Once again, the modding community defies common sense to hilarious results.

High Effort Ugh 2.0 knows what its audience wants: Ugh, Ugh, and more Ugh. This mod quite literally removes all other stages of the game, all other characters, all other songs from the rhythm game. After all, argues the mod author, it’s got everything the dedicated player needs: the Ugh track, Tankman, and…

Maybe it’s an acquired taste. But for the hyper-dedicated fan, the mod is available here to download.

5 Obama Night Funkin’: A Chuckle-in-Chief

Sure, any rap battle can be good. But can it really be great without featuring the two-term 44th U.S. President Barack Obama? Maybe. But some modders aren’t willing to risk it. Replacing the sprite for Daddy Dearest with a custom sprite of Barack Obama and replacing the original with a custom presidential rap battle, the FNF modding community ensures that if Obama ever does become a crucial celebrity to feature within the rhythm game genre, they’re well ahead of the curve.

Obama Night Funkin’ can be downloaded here, for players seeking a formal presidential chuckle.

4 VS Shaggy: Like, Slow Down, Man!

It’s a quite common meme at this point that Shaggy from Scooby-Doo is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Modders for Friday Night Funkin’ decided to put that to the test and designed a brand-new level with an intimidating new premise.

While the player duels Shaggy in the traditional rapping style for the first half of the mod, logic quickly breaks down and Shaggy forces two additional action keys into the level. The player’s muscle memory is thrown for a loop, and Shaggy suddenly becomes the challenging foe that the memes forewarned of.

For a player looking for an absurd challenge against an absurd guest star, the mod can be downloaded here.

3 Summer Vacations: Resting, Relaxing, and Rapping

Sometimes even the most dedicated rappers need a vacation. And somehow Daddy Dearest seems a bit less intimidating trapped in a little pool floatie. The Summer Vacations mod reskins every stage and opponent in the game to match a laid-back beachfront aesthetic. Opponents rap into ice cream treats instead of microphones, the girlfriend finally gets an actual speaker-less chair to relax on, and the player is treated to a custom song created by the mod author.

For a relaxing beachfront experience (and the hilarious reskins of formerly intimidating opponents), the mod can be downloaded here.

2 Wii Funkin' (VS MATT): A Comical Punch to the Face

Look, not all opponents need to make sense. Sometimes they just need to beat the stuffing out of you. And Matt, a nasty opponent many may remember from Wii Sports boxing levels, is there to make sure the player gets slammed into a humiliating defeat. There’s nothing quite like losing to a fellow rapping the Wii Sports theme at you.

The mod can be downloaded here for those who miss the Wii days. With tricky new tracks and a bundle of fun original songs, Matt is ready to beat the confidence out of an overconfident challenger.

1 Friday Night Flippin’: "This all seems very familiar..."

Friday Night Funkin’ is known for its charming character designs and iconic matching tracks. So what if someone took all that it threw it into a blender? Friday Night Flippin’ redesigns and replaces every character in the game, from the boyfriend to the weekly opponents. Seeing fun-sized Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest stacked atop each other like Skid and Pump is hysterical, and the redesigned Monster-girlfriend is a special kind of disturbing.

For players looking to make the familiar exotic, disturbing, and sidesplittingly amusing, Friday Night Flippin’ can be downloaded here.
