Ron Perlman will lend his voice talent to the newest live-action Transformers film, Rise of the Beasts, to bring Optimus Primal to life.

Ron Perlman is one of Hollywood's most memorable character actors, often playing brash and brooding roles in action movies. He's also known for his unmistakably grainy voice, which he'll be putting to use in the newly-titled upcoming action film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Perlman will voice Optimus Primal, which will be the second time he's lent his voice to the character. He first voiced Optimus Primal in the 2018 TV mini-series Transformers: Power of the Primes. The former Hellyboy star will be joined by fellow actors Anthony Ramos (In The Heights) and Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) for the first live-action Transformers film since 2018's Bumblebee.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take place during the '90s and will expand on the battle between Autobots and Decepticons on Earth. It will introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons. Perlman's character, who, yes, is a direct descendant of Optimus Prime, is the leader of the Maximals, who can transform into animal-like beasts and are descendants of the Autobots. Perhaps the most recognized version of Optimus Primal was seen in Beast Wars (titled Beasties in Canada), a Canadian-American computer-animated series that centered on the conflict between the Maximals and Predacons after members of both sides crash land on an unknown planet. Collider first reported Perlman's casting.

Steven Caple Jr. will direct the film that centers on Beast Wars, which will be his third feature-length film. Previously, Caple Jr. had directed the films Creed II and The Land along with episodes of shows like Grown-ish and Rapture. Steven Spielberg will be returning to the franchise as an executive producer and Michael Bay, who directed the first five live-action Transformer movies, will also serve as a producer. The film was written by Joby Harold (Army of the Dead), Matt Holloway (Transformers: The Last Knight), and Art Marcum (Men in Black: International).

Fans of the robots that are "more than meets the eye" have seen the franchise drastically evolve since 2007's Transformers movie starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Bumblebee, voiced by Mark Ryan. The franchise has switched cast members and story focus enough that fans have seen LaBeouf, Mark Wahlberg, and more come and go, with Ramos being the newest leading man.

Details on the new film are still largely being kept a secret. However, Ramos has said that he believes the last film, Bumblebee, has opened up the possibility for Rise of the Beasts to tell a different kind of story than what fans are used to.

Transformers: Rise of theBeasts is scheduled to release in theaters on June 24, 2022.
