Sea of Thieves offers players plenty of customization options, but when it comes to scars, players may be out of luck for some designs.

Sea of Thieves players looking to spice up their character can turn to the Vanity chest. This chest is home to beards, hair, hooks, tattoos, and even the more rare items in the game such as curses and scars. Though these Vanity chests can be easy to find in Sea of Thieves, Vanity items such as scars can be difficult to unlock.

Vanity chests spawn in ships as well as in front of General Clothing Stores at outposts and in Athena's Fortune Hideout. At the moment there have been six scars players could have or currently can access. This list includes the Scar of the Blue Horizon, Scars of the Ocean Deep, Shroudbreaker Scar, Bone Crusher Scars, Forsaken Ashes Scars, and Shark Bitemark Scars. Unfortunately for Sea of Thieves players, most of these scars were only open for a limited time.

Sea of Thieves runs seasons of different content where players can take on new challenges and earn new rewards. So some of these scars have been only available during these seasons of content. This makes the Scar of the Blue Horizon and the Forsaken Ashes Scars the only options open for players who recently joined Sea of Thieves. The former scar is available right now as part of the game's third season, which began on June 22nd. For players interested, this update will likely remain open for about 12 weeks and this scar becomes available for purchase for players who reach Renown level 100.

Renown can be earned in many ways in Sea of Thieves, giving players a great chance to reach this goal. Renown is earned passively, through visiting islands, killing skeletons, and collecting treasure, or more actively through taking on trials. Trials are specific tasks players can take on during a season of content to gain larger amounts of Renown.

The Forsaken Ashes Scars requires players to have earned the Master Devil's Voyager commendation in the game. This Sea of Thieves commendation asks players to complete 5 Devil's Roar Voyages a piece for the Gold Hoarders and Order of Souls. Upon successful completion of these tasks, the Forsaken Ashes Clothing, Vanity, and Equipment sets should become available to purchase.

In order to unlock Shroudbreaker scar as well as Scars of the Ocean Deep in Sea of Thieves, players had to have played season 1 and season 2, respectively. The Shroudbreaker Scar became available to earn in later January of this year and left the game with the end of season 1 in April. The second scar option was available from April until June 22nd of this year. In both cases, players had to reach Renown level 100 within that season to earn the respective scar.

The other scars that were available to players but have since gone away include the Bone Crusher Scars, the Forsaken Ashes Scars, and the Shark Bitemark Scars. These three scars came out in 2018 alongside the Cursed Sails and Hungering Deep content updates to Sea of Thieves that year, respectively. These each became available for purchase by players who accomplished specific challenges/events during those updates.

Sea of Thieves is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
