There are a lot of interesting things you need to know about Oryx, the Taken King, from the Destiny franchise.

Oryx, The Taken King was a massive antagonist that appeared in the second expansion of Destiny 1. He was the heir to the Osmium throne but became a feared Hive God. He was also the father of memorable Hive bosses Crota, Nokris, Ir Halak, and Ir Anuk.

Although he and his family have perished, his legacy remains strong; thanks to Savathun and Xivu Arath becoming more relevant in Destiny 2.

9 The Books Of Sorrow

Books of Sorrow are verses put together by Oryx about his family's origin and what he and his sisters have been up to for thousands of years. Some verses came from his sisters explaining their perspective. Finding Calcified Fragments around the Dreadnaught gave players a verse so that they can recover the entire book; then eventually the Touch of Malice exotic weapon. The book explains the origin of the Hive, reveals the Worm Gods, his encounter with the Vex, and more stories relevant to the current Destiny world.

8 Born As Aurash

Oryx's birth name was Aurash. The three sisters lived on a floating continent called the Osmium Court that rested over a gas planet named Fundament. Aurash, Sathona, and Xi Ro lived with their father, the Osmium King. After the Osmium King was killed by Taox and the Helium Court, the three sisters escaped on a ship. Aurash commanded the ship and wanted to take it into the center of the Fundament.

7 Aurash Was Knowledgable

Young Aurash was on a quest for two years, and they returned with the knowledge that would change their perspective of everything. Aurash discovered that their ancestors weren't native to Fundament, but were in fact refugees. Aurash believed that the Osmium Court had "a better destiny" than being preyed on by the nearby continents. Additionally, Aurash's letter ended with them saying "with love" to Sathona, showing that love in their family was different back then. Much later on, the sisters showed love by practicing killing each other, that's just what Darkness does.

6 Auryx Must Always Explore

Aurash, known as the navigator, was always a curious person and took charge when needed to. Aurash's nature was to understand. To maintain their immortality, Aurash, Sathona, and Xi Ro must stay true to their nature. Aurash was told to "never cease to explore and inquire, for the sake of your children" in the IX: The Bargain lore piece. With this new power, Aurash took the king morph and became Auryx.

5 Savathun Killed Him For Showing Weakness

When Auryx and his sisters were still understanding the Sword Logic and their worms, Auryx did something unacceptable. Auryx wanted to show mercy to Ammonite.

Auryx was struggling with his worm, he believed in peace and stability which went against the worm's desires. After Auryx was killed, he discovered his throne world. He soon returned to the real world more ruthless than ever.

4 Developed A Tribute Pyramid

In the XXIX: Carved in Ruin lore, Oryx and his sisters slew the Ecumene to conjure his sisters. To keep their worms fed, he created a law to make sure they get enough tribute. The law requires Thralls to take as much as they need and to give the rest to the Acolyte. The Acolyte must then do the same with Knights and Wizards. The Knights and Wizards must give their additional gains to an Ascendant they serve.

3 Tablets Of Ruin

After killing Savathun and Xivu Arath in the throne world, he gained their power. In the XXVIII: King of Shapes lore, Auryx slays the powerful Worm God Akka with his new strength. After Akka was cut into pieces, Auryx learned the secrets of the Darkness and wrote them onto a set of tablets.

These tablets are known as the Tablets of Ruin. They hold a secret dear to Auryx, the power to Take. This was when he used his power to create the Taken. This was also when he went from Auryx to become the Taken King, Oryx.

2 Crota and Oryx

While his daughters Ir Halak and Ir Anuk were creating the death-defying Oversoul, Oryx told Crota to learn from them. Crota tried to copy his sisters and instead opened a path for the Vex to enter Oryx's throne world. For this, Oryx banished Crota as a punishment.

In the L: Wormfood lore, Oryx explained how he depended on Crota and his other children to keep his worm alive by receiving their tributes. However, Crota's death was a huge blow to Oryx's tribute. In part XLVIII of Books of Sorrow, Oryx revealed that Crota brought in a lot of tribute.

After the attack from the Vex network in this throne world, Oryx realized he needed to be more cautious. When Savathun learned where Oryx's throne world was, she told Xivu Arath so that she could attack.

However, Oryx knew about the danger that looms around him so he moved his throne world to the Dreadnaught so it won't be defenseless. This was why in the King's Fall raid, players kill Oryx on the Dreadnaught.

1 Rumors of Being Revived

Rumors of Oryx's resurrection started ever since he was defeated in the King's Fall raid. Lore from the Cryptoglygh messages indicates that the Hive are hoping for Oryx's return, but it's not likely.

Oryx used the Books of Sorrow fragments to create the Touch of Malice, the weapon was a way for him to live beyond death. Although Nokris practiced necromancy, it was something Oryx hated since it went against their traditional ways of the Sword Logic.
