Demon Slayer has become a hugely popular anime, its versus mode has a large cast of characters to draw from when the game releases in the West.

Its hard to overstate how popular the Demon Slayer franchise has quickly become. So it's not surprising that the series has spawned a video game set to release on October 15 called Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. After the popularity of the anime series and the massive success of its first theatrical release, the news of a full-fledged game has likely gotten many fans very excited. The game will feature a full story mode focusing on both arcs of the anime and the movie, but its longevity will likely be tied to the success of the Versus Mode coming in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles.

Demon Slayer's success will depend heavily on its Story Mode. Fans of the anime are likely very excited at the prospect of its Versus Mode as well. There tends to be a large crossover between anime and fighting game fandom, so the game's battle system will likely be under some heavy scrutiny. Luckily, the story of Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko includes a cast of characters that are both engaging and equipped with very different approaches to combat. Most of the playable characters come from the Demon Slayer Corps, the notable exceptions being Nezuko and the two "Fox Cubs" that were students of Sakonji Urokodaki.

The first and most obvious inclusions are Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamoda. The main protagonist Tanjiro will feature his Water Breathing style, just as will all of the Demon Slayer Corps characters. Nezuko features a more primal style of combat as befitting her nature as a demon. Tanjiro seems to feature a swift but methodical style, similar to his techniques seen in the anime. Nezuko's abilities were shown off in more detail in the recent trailer for Demon Slayer alongside many of the other now-confirmed characters. It seems that the game will feature exclusively hero characters, including the Beast Breathing user Inosuke, from the anime for its 2v2 Versus Mode.

Demon Slayer Corps. members all utilize different "breathing" techniques, and it seems most of them are coming to the Versus Mode. The selectively-heroic Zenitsu and his Thunder Breathing are set for an appearance. Bringing his Fire Breathing style is Rengoku, one of the fan-favorite warriors featured in the Mugen Train move. Stoic and confident Tomioka will also be available, another practitioner of the Water Breathing techniques. He and Tanjiro's master Urokodaki also joins the roster alongside his former students.

Featuring so many of the Hashira-level slayers makes sense, but it's fairly surprising to see the deceased Sabito and Makomo. The two were former students of Urokodaki, but had died during their final trial to become Demon Slayers proper. While the two were pivotal to Tanjiro's growth as a warrior having spurred him on to complete his training, but their status as deceased is still interesting to see. Rounding out the confirmed characters ahead of Demon Slayer's October release is the wielder of the Insect Breathing style, Shinobu Kocho. Her vicious battle methods and polite demeanor could lend a more technical character to the roster when Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles releases.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is set for release on October 15, 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
