Apple debuted a teaser and release date for a new science fiction series Foundation, a show that looks ready to take viewers to deep space.

AppleTV+ is quickly making strides to offer a body of content capable of rivaling other streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. Now, Apple has unveiled the teaser and release date for a new science fiction series titled Foundation, and the show looks ready to take viewers to deep space.

Foundation is based on a novel of the same name by Isaac Asimov and follows a group of revolutionaries in space knows as The Foundation, who predict the fall of their Galactic Empire and travel across the galaxy in order to save the future of the empire's civilization. Asimov's Foundation novels were a success, with the original series releasing in the early 1950s before more books were released in the '80s and '90s. Other classic science fiction novels such as Dune and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy were also inspired in part by Asimov's Foundation novels.

Apple revealed on Sunday that the series will arrive on Apple TV Plus on Friday, September 24. David S. Goyer, who is the screenwriter of films such as The Dark KnightMan of Steel, and the original Blade trilogy as well as a creator of TV series like Constantine and Netflix's upcoming adaptation of The Sandman, is the executive producer and showrunner of Foundation. The series boasts an exciting cast of actors including Jared Harris (Chernobyl), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Lou Llobell (Voyagers). The series was produced for Apple by Skydance Television and will consist of ten episodes.

In addition to continuing notable series such as SeeServant, and The Morning Show, Apple TV Plus has been greenlighting a slew of new projects, including the musical comedy series Schmigadoon! and a Dan Harmon animated adaptation of Strange Planet. The streamer is also making inspired choices when funding and exclusively streaming films like Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon.

Even with an already impressive line-up of projects, an adaptation of an influential novel such as Foundation is a bold move for Apple and its streaming platform. With an impressive sense of scale and a zealous dedication to bringing the novel's world to life, Foundation will surely delight science-fiction fans of all ages.

While it goes without saying that Apple is one of the most recognized names in the world, the company's streaming service has arguably struggled to reach the level of recognization attained by competitors like Netflix and Amazon. With Foundation and more ambitious projects on the way, that could soon change.

Foundation begins streaming on Apple TV Plus on September 24th, 2021.
