The world of Sea of Thieves is one that is teeming with formidable creatures and enemies, though few can be as intimidating as the Kraken.

Sea of Thieves is far from an easy experience once players begin seriously searching for treasure. The world is filled with terrifying creatures and formidable enemies lying in wait for any greedy pirates, and some Sea of Thieves players won't escape without taking on a few scars. But, of course, few of those creatures can hold a flame to what nearly every pirate defines as a nightmare across the seven seas: the Kraken, a massive, multi-tentacled squid that can sink ships in seconds.

An encounter with the Kraken is one that Sea of Thieves players absolutely won't walk away from without a fight. The Kraken easily eclipses even the largest of ships, forcing players to target individual tentacles in hopes of wounding the massive creature. Interestingly, finding the Kraken is a little easier said than done, as the monolithic foe tends to be a little shy in confronting players. But, no worries, this guide will go into the details of how to find the Kraken in Sea of Thieves.

Essentially, the Kraken can't be found - rather, the Kraken will always confront players first. Players will know the Kraken has spawned once a musical cue starts and the water around the ship darkens.

In general, Sea of Thieves players are picked at random to be attacked by the Kraken, and it can even target the same ship twice in a row. With a server at maximum capacity and all ships on the open sea, there's a 1 in 6 chance of being attacked by one. These chances rise the more ships that are docked or sunk on the server, making this a good way to coax the Kraken out of its dark, murky habitat.

That said, the Kraken will only spawn under certain conditions. For example, the Kraken generally only spawns in between other world events, such as the Skeleton Fort or Flameheart. If any of these is visible, the chances of a Kraken encounter go down exponentially. Another good tip to keep in mind is how close one is to any nearby islands. Keeping a ship within range of any of the islands means the Kraken won't spawn at all.

On a final note, it's entirely possible that if no world event is active and the Kraken isn't attacking, it may be attacking another player entirely. This opens up the opportunity to attack and pillage, or assist them in attacking the prehistoric creature. On the other hand, players should be careful, as Kraken attacks can follow directly after other world events, making for a tight chance at survival. Thankfully, escape is somewhat an option if players can make it out of the inky water quickly.

Sea of Thieves is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
