While Marvel’s Avengers fans are excited for Spider-Man and Black Panther, their potential impact on dupe heroes should only add to the hype.

Marvel’s Avengers is quickly closing in on the release of War for Wakanda, as the highly anticipated DLC is set to debut in August. When it does, the king of Wakanda will finally be playable, with gamers getting the chance to control Crystal Dynamics’ version of Black Panther. After he makes his debut, Spider-Man should be swinging into the game, as he is confirmed to show up after Black Panther has been added.

While Marvel’s Avengers players are looking forward to playing as the two heroes, as well as the fresh content that will come with their arrival, there is another reason to be excited. Recently, Marvel’s Avengers announced that players would permanently be able to have multiple versions of the same hero in their party. Black Panther and Spider-Man can make use of this system in a major way, with both characters also improving upon it. On the flip side, both T’Challa and Peter Parker could serve as the basis for some similar heroes, making a scenario like the two different Hawkeyes possible.

First and foremost, Marvel’s Avengers’ dupe hero feature is perfect for the upcoming hero additions. Previously, gamers that play in groups were not able make use of the new heroes right away, as only one player could use them. This meant that Clint Barton’s release was less exciting for a full party, as gamers needed to wait for their turn to use the character. With Marvel’s Avengers requiring a hero to be leveled up, too, this can be especially bothersome. Players not only need to wait their turn, but when they do get to a DLC character they will be underleveled.

As such, dupe heroes coming to the game is great, as it gives everyone the chance to play as Black Panther and Spider-Man when they launch. On top of this, the addition is a big deal for the game’s meta as well. In Marvel’s Avengers, some heroes are clearly stronger than others. Hulk, for example, is consistently near the bottom of the list. Near the top, the Hawkeyes and Thor can be found. The dupe feature will allow everyone to play as the best possible character at all times, and with Marvel’s Avengers set to up its difficulty soon, this is a big deal.

Marvel’s Avengers’ new content plan is centered around introducing some proper endgame challenges, making the ability to follow the meta a big deal. With group members no longer being forced to play as lesser heroes, as each can select a top tier character, conquering this content should be easier. In the case of Black Panther and Spider-Man, they will improve this system by adding more variety to the mix. Based on Kate Bishop and Clint Barton, Spidey and Black Panther will likely be powerful. As such, players have two more strong options to choose from, expanding the meta in a meaningful way. With groups of four able to have two Black Panthers and two Spider-Men, gamers should be able to stick with a proper meta while also playing who they want to.

Outside of the new characters taking full advantage of the dupe hero feature, they could serve as the blueprint for similar characters. Marvel’s Avengers’ two Hawkeyes are an example of this format, as are some of the leaked characters that have yet to arrive. While Clint and Kate both use bows and swords, their attacks and abilities are entirely different. As such, while they may be copycats of one another, they feel different when it comes to their gameplay. With Spider-Man and Black Panther both being so unique, the two add some fresh archetypes for Crystal Dynamics to build from.

Spider-Man has tons of potential when it comes to these offshoot characters, as there are plenty of different Spider-Men in the comics. With one of Marvel’s Avengers’ leaked heroes being Spider-Woman, too, she would be a fine choice for a “dupe” hero. While she would fight like Peter in a lot of ways, she has Venom blasts like Miles Morales as well. She also boasts a movement style that leans on gliding as opposed to webswinging, something that would work for the current traversal system in Marvel’s Avengers. With her energy blasts also making her different, she would be a great addition to the game.

Marvel’s Avengers can also pull from the Spider-Verse, adding alternate versions of the webslinger to the game. While some would be fine as skins, others could be their own character. Spider-Man Noir could wield guns like Black Widow, making him an interesting hybrid. Spider-Man 2099 could make use of his futuristic technology, while the fan favorite Spider-Gwen could boast a more acrobatic style of combat. With Miles Morales himself possible too, as he would have great conversations with his fellow teenager Ms. Marvel, there is a lot of potential in the game adding some alternate Spiders. Games like Marvel Heroes and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3 have shown how different their movesets could be, too, meaning that Crystal Dynamics should consider the idea.

Black Panther’s upcoming release is equally exciting, as he opens the door for more melee-focused fighters. While no other characters would have his Vibranium abilities, they could re-use his claws. While unlikely, T’Challa could serve as a gateway for someone like Wolverine. The character’s berserker rage would be perfect for an intrinsic ability, and T’Challa’s fast-paced claw strikes could give Crystal Dynamics the tech needed to start working on Logan. While his claws are much sharper than Black Panther’s, the way that the two use them is similar enough.

Outside of helping to bring in a special member of the X-Men, Black Panther could introduce a proper “dupe” hero in Shuri. With his sister having taken over the mantle in the comics, and possibly needing to do so in the MCU as well, she could be a lot of fun to play as in-game. A more tech-based fighter, she could rule Wakanda as Queen and protect it as another Black Panther. With her comic book suit already being great, Crystal Dynamics has a great opportunity for another character. With Two Hawkeyes working so well, having a second Black Panther could see even more of the hero’s powers brought to life.

No matter which way fans are looking at the phrase “dupe heroes,” there are reasons to be excited about Spider-Man and Black Panther. In the case of hero selection, the pair adds a lot of variety to the mix, significantly improving the meta. They also take full advantage of the new feature that lets duplicate heroes be used in groups, ensuring that it is even more beneficial. As far as introducing copycat characters, the fresh abilities for Spidey and Black Panther open up a whole new world of possibilities for Crystal Dynamics. Whether it is an alternate version of Spider-Man or Shuri training under her brother, more playable characters could come from the next additions.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
