Ghost of Tsushima was a hit on PS4, earning the title of Game of the Year at various different game awards. Almost a year later, Sucker Punch and Sony are giving fans a treat, as they will soon be able to play the already gorgeous and smooth title on PS5. Dubbed the Director's Cut, players that purchase this new version will gain access to a brand new island to explore, new items and quests, and much more. Although it is available on both consoles, players might be wondering about how the PS5 upgrade will work. Unfortunately, it isn't free like many games have been.
For the most part, the words PS5 upgrade and free seem synonymous. Many developers have spoiled players by making the PS5 versions of their games free upgrades so long as the player already owns the PS4 version. This is not the case with the Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, although that isn't to say that current owners will be paying full price for the new version.

As a standalone purchase, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut costs $60 on PS4 and $70 on PS5. This $10 difference between the two versions is definitely unusual, but it does fall in line with Sony's practice of charging a premium for certain PS5 games. It also is likely the reason that the PS5 upgrade is not free. Assuming players already own the standard version of Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, they can upgrade to the Director's Cut on PS4 for $20. Players that purchase the Director's Cut on PS4 and want to upgrade later to PS5 can do so for $10. Alternatively, players with the standard PS4 version can jump straight to the Director's Cut on PS5 for an upgrade of $30.
It should be noted that there's no way for players to upgrade to the standard version on PS5, as all PS5 versions of Ghost of Tsushima will include the Director's Cut content. It seems as though the Director's Cut content is being valued at $20 whereas the PS5 upgrade itself is valued at $10. If that seems expensive, remember that there is an all new island to explore as well as other content, so it's sort of like a DLC. Here's a recap of all the Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut upgrade packages available:
- Ghost of Tsushima (PS4) to Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (PS4) - $20
- Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (PS4) to Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (PS5) - $10
- Ghost of Tsushima (PS4) to Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (PS5) - $30.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut releases on August 20th for both PS4 and PS5, but players can pre-order their upgrade now. Doing so before the release date will also net the player some neat bonuses, so those that already know they'd love to play the game more should go ahead and pre-order. All save files will transfer over between PS4 and PS5.
