Grounded's Shroom and Doom update brings a ton of brand new fan-requested features to the game as it aims to leave early access this year.

Grounded Shroom and Doom is now available on Xbox and PC following an E3 reveal that got fans excited for the future of the game. Developer Obsidian Entertainment recently announced the latest update for the garden-based survival title after previously sharing that it would be receiving fewer, but larger updates going forward. These large updates are expected to bring features that were previously missing from the game in its early access phase over to the full release.

The Shroom and Doom update looks to begin this process of shifting Grounded from its current status as an early access game, and it is making a good start. Shroom and Doom brings with it a number of fan-requested features, adding gameplay improvements, quality of life changes, and an all-new boss. With so much content coming to Grounded in this update, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Luckily, developer Obsidian Entertainment has shared everything fans need to know when booting up the updated game for the first time.

For fans who love exploring solo, but prefer an offline experience, the latest Grounded update has just the thing. Shroom and Doom brings with it the opportunity for players to find their own in-game pet. The Shroom and Doom trailer showed off a little green aphid that the player can actually pet, while weevils can also be tamed and kept as pets. While Grounded's pets enhance the cutesy aesthetic of the game, they also give the player an opportunity to take on some of the scarier parts of the game with a friend in tow.

Players should be wary when taking their pet on adventures, however, as pets are just as vulnerable as the player to taking damage. As such, they can be killed if gamers are not careful. With this in mind, it may be best to keep the critters out of harm'ss way or avoid developing too much of an attachment to them. Multiple weevils and aphids can be tamed at a time, though, with players only needing to build the corresponding amount of pet houses. Pets can be tamed by creating a plant slurry at the grinder.

Another highly requested feature sees players being able to take a load off and put their feet up after a long day of exploring and surviving. While sitting is one of the more minor update notes, it offers some extra utility for all the furniture that Grounded players have collected. Whether the ability to sit in-game will be one of the main draws of then update is yet to be seen, but at least fans can now use their furniture for more than some simple decoration.

The shroom half of the Shroom and Doom update is bringing a swathe of new possibilities to players who love to build. For example, the Shroom and Doom trailer shows a player building a relatively monstrous castle that towers above the grass and backyard critters. The castle is made out of Shroombricks, a new building material added via the update. To build these bricks the player must grind chunks of mushroom into a slurry, before going on to cook them into bricks. According to the Grounded website, these are the sturdiest building materials at the player's disposal, so the castles players build will be stylish and protective.

The player needs to spend some time transforming mushrooms into building materials, though, which is where the grinder and oven enter the equation. The grinder, as the name suggests, grinds the mushrooms into a cement-like slurry. It can also be used to craft the plant slurry players need to attract the previously mentioned pets. Once a mushroom slurry has been crafted, the oven is able to turn this slurry into the mushroom bricks shown off in the trailer. The oven and grinder are key elements that players will need to master in order to enjoy much of what the update has to offer.

Building in Grounded is set to be a lot more fleshed out with the latest update. A host of new options outside of the mushroom castles are now available to the player. Building pieces can now be flipped to better fit the player base, allowing players to flip individual objects rather than rearrange their building to accommodate. Players can also build curved walls, allowing for some more interestingly shaped structures, while new roof types and pillars will also add more depth to the building aspect of the game.

As Grounded launched as an early access game, a handful of features players might expect from the game were missing. One of these features that raised a few eyebrows was the absence of achievements. This has now changed, however, as Obsidian Entertainment has added 20 achievements to the game on all platforms. Most of these achievements are things players are likely to complete incidentally, like constructing one  mushroom-brick building. However, more achievements are expected to be added in future updates.

The Grounded website adds an important note with regards to attaining some of Grounded's hardest achievements. Unfortunately for achievement hunters who have previously played through Grounded and completed the achievement tasks, they will have to re-complete a handful to unlock them. Examples given of the type of achievements gamers will have to complete again include killing a wolf spider and item crafting.

The enemies players face in Grounded are widely considered to be one of its biggest draws, but equally, one of its biggest deterrents. The goliath spiders in Grounded are both horrific and inescapable, with water spiders making their debut last year. Players who are terrified of Grounded's spiders now have yet another reason to be scared, as the latest update adds a brand new spider-type, the Broodmother.

The Broodmother is the game's first boss, so players need to stock up before attempting to face it. This is where Grounded's new crossbow could come in handy. The crossbow has a higher reload time than a traditional bow, though it packs a punch. Players will also need to craft a Broodmother BLT to lure Grounded's Broodmother out from its hiding place. The recipe for the BLT can be found in the Hedge Lab and can only be used in the Broodmother's lair, ensuring that some work must be done before she can be fought.

Grounded is out now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
