Of the paths players can take in GreedFall, the Technical skill tree involves the most cunning and trickery. Here are its best skills to pick up.

As an RPG, part of GreedFall's design is about tailoring unique styles of gameplay to suit different players. Gamers must choose which type of hero (or villain) they want to be as they move through the story. To accommodate these desires, developer Spiders have spun a web of three skill trees: Warrior, Magic, and Technical.

All three have their advantages, but the Technical branch deals with different tools at players' disposal. It's akin to a rogue or saboteur in Dragon Age, the series from which GreedFall draws much inspiration. Those pursuing this path should know which skills to invest their points in. Granted, many of these are dirty tricks, but DeSardet should take any advantage he/she can get over island's godlike monsters.

10 Set Trap

All those materials have to go somewhere, and traps are as good a place as any to start. However, these are more like landmines than traditional traps, damaging any enemies within a few meters of the mix.

This skill could stop a charging herd or batch of thugs in their tracks. In essence, it turns the tide before the battle even begins, and players in the lower levels will be eminently thankful for it. Just make sure to use the trap on larger enemies; human foes with their smaller hit boxes might run right past it.

9 Fast Traps

Alchemical traps are initially reserved for preemptive strikes. They're just too cumbersome to craft in the heat of battle. But what if that wasn't the case? Why should such an advantage be limited to pre-battle preparation?

Thankfully, players can upgrade the ability to eliminate this limitation. The Fast Trap lets DeSardet lay down an explosive while dodging. Time it right, and it makes for a crippling comeback, albeit one requiring the right materials.

8 Rifle

Sorry, Dragon Age fans. No bows and arrows here. As gamers can guess, the rifle is just the natural evolution of the pistol. The rate of fire isn't quite as fast, so DeSardet probably shouldn't try to get a shot off when face-to-face with a monster. On the upside though, rifles generally pack a bigger punch than pistols. Those who don't mind the brief windup will take off more of an enemy's armor.

That said, the lower-level rifles only have marginally more impact than pistols. Given both this and how far players have to progress in the Skill Tree, some players might not find these new weapons to be worth the tradeoff.

7 Anointed Weapons

During his/her travels, DeSardet encounters several elemental spirits of the island. Because of their nature, however, they are undoubtedly weaker against opposing elements. This is where anointing weapons comes into play.

Coating swords and other tools in alchemical mixes can tremendously boost one's damage output. For the more imposing enemies, this eventually becomes the only viable way of dealing major damage with melee attacks without pursuing the Warrior Skill Tree. It's surprising how much easier a boss fight becomes with a poisoned blade.

6 Phial Throw

At a certain point, setting traps and hoping enemies will activate them gets old. What if Technical players want to attack adversaries directly? The Phial Throw covers this direct approach.

Tossing a chemical mixture at an opponent is easily more convenient than hoping they walk into traps. Not only does it cut down on prep time, but it's less likely to miss and capable of much more damage. This is especially true if DeSardet has multiple phials to throw. Most importantly, it affects the intended enemy instead of whoever randomly walks over a trap.

5 Light Grenades

One would think that throwing a phial would be a safe bet for combat, as it's a damaging area-of-effect attack unleashed from a distance. Given the sheer amount of enemies that lunge in this game, though, the base throwing range soon seems like nothing.

The ability to toss these mixes from farther away minimizes the danger. It also means having more time to fire another phial before melee combat kicks in. DeSardet could potentially cripple an entire enemy group before they ever reach the party.

4 Bomb

Though this is another projectile toss, it's perhaps the most devastating. The Bomb trumps the Phial Throw in many ways. For one thing, it covers a wider area, dealing damage to more mooks in the vicinity. In addition, the ensuing explosion carries a killer knockback. By the end, enemies are either off their guard or on the ground. Who needs magic when man-made concoctions are this powerful?

The only downside is that it doesn't have the same lasting effects as a chemical mix, but this weakness is only temporary. After all, that's what the specialty bombs are for.

3 Toxic Bomb

As the name suggests, this tool has all the advantages of a Bomb and then some. Not only does it deliver the same raw impact, but it leaves a lingering funk that poisons those struck. It takes what little chance of survival they had and minimizes it further. If the initial explosion doesn't get them, the poison will.

The Toxic Bomb is a truly ruinous weapon against both large groups and big bosses, as neither one can stand up to it for long. Players may have to progress far into the Skill Tree, but it's well worth the wait. Then again, those familiar with this type of RPG might be used to a little grinding.

2 Economical Alchemy

An alchemist is nothing without materials. Spending them on bombs and traps is a risk, especially when those tools don't work. This skill solves that problem by letting DeSardet take back the ingredients from where a bomb or trap went off.

This obviously saves a ton of time on collecting from the wilderness and buying from shops. In addition, it encourages conservative players to unleash their arsenals more often. After all, they don't lose anything by cutting loose. Chuck that bomb!

1 Firearms

Fundamentals are often the most important in any game. That's why the best Technical Skill is the ability to use firearms. Specifically, this upgrade allows players to equip a pistol as an additional weapon.

This may not sound like much on its own, but it's a precious boon in the game's early hours. DeSardet's draw is surprisingly quick, allowing players to seamlessly integrate it into their melee combat. Plus, it conveniently chips away an enemy's armor from a distance, essential when confronting colossal creatures. Overwhelmed players will find that firearms are their friend. Players who disagree can always use a Memory Crystal, as the Technical path doesn't get any better than this.
