Patty Jenkins confirms that the intention behind her new Star Wars film is to honor the legacy and rich history of Rogue Squadron.

Patty Jenkins is a director who needs no introduction since she has tackled some of the biggest blockbusters to date, including both Wonder Woman flicks. Recently, Jenkins discussed the three major projects that are on her plate at the moment, including Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

While Jenkins is simultaneously working on the third Wonder Woman movie and Cleopatra, she made it clear that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will have her full attention next. First announced last December, Rogue Squadron will be the next Star Wars movie to be added to the franchise.

Jenkins is no stranger to the pressure and demands that come with taking on Rogue Squadron from her experience with directing Wonder Woman. She sure likes to stay busy though, revealing to the Associated Press that she would love to tackle multiple films if she was allowed to. The responsibility that comes with taking Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on is addressed by her. Yet, the fear is clearly not stopping her from doing the absolute best she can for Rogue Squadron to flourish.

Jenkins is trying to somehow morph the past into the future, which is by far not the easiest task to take on. She must acknowledge the past and Jenkins wants this film to honor the legacy of the Rogue Squadron books while also bringing fresh energy into the mix. Although it's relieving to see Jenkins' strong intentions to honor the legacy, she has confirmed that Rogue Squadron will not at all be an adaptation of the novels. Jenkins stated in the same interview, “The Michael Stackpole books and the video games, there’s an incredible history that's really important to honor. And yet, it must be brought to a new age, because we have to tell a new story with it.”

The Rogue Squadron novels by Michael A. Stackpole centered around the main character Wedge Antilles, who starts to recruit the most powerful and threatening pack of X-wing pilots. These chosen X-wing pilots are who make up the titular team. Jenkins has confirmed that her Star Wars movie will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots. In her interview though, Jenkins made sure to mention that she is not discrediting and undermining the rich history and legacy from the novels and video games.

Fans may be left in the dark as to what they can expect from the Rogue Squadron film. However, Jenkin’s public devotion to honoring the legacy proves that she might just be the only hero who is capable of doing the Star Wars franchise justice, especially since most fans seem to agree the legacy was tarnished by the poorly-received The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will be in theaters on December 22nd, of 2023.
