Red Dead Redemption 2 Mission Image References Distracted Boyfriend Meme

Red Dead Redemption 2 players find another hidden detail inside the game, with the latest discovery being a funny nod to a popular meme.

Red Dead Redemption 2 players are always on the lookout for some new details, and while many are on the funny side, few specifically reference memes. However, one mission seems to be doing just that, as a Red Dead Redemption 2 fan has found an interesting layout for the quest’s image.

The mission in question is called “Brothers and Sisters, One for All,” and it sees a young boy stealing a nun’s crucifix. Introduced to the nun through Brother Dorkins, a priest that Arthur met in the Red Dead Redemption 2 mission “Help a Brother Out,” the outlaw feels obliged to help once the cross is stolen. While the mission does ultimately see Arthur collecting the cross, it is the quest photo that caught the eye of Redditor The_Synth_Potato. According to the player, it is a nod to the Distracted Boyfriend meme, and it is hard not to see the resemblance.

In the image, Arthur can be seen looking over his shoulder. Next to the Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist is Brother Dorkins, with the boy seen running away with the crucifix on the left side of the screen. The similarities to the meme are clear, with the shocked look on Brother Dorkins’ face perfectly matching the meme’s “angry girlfriend.” Arthur’s stance clearly mimics that of the boyfriend in the meme, as the way he looks over his shoulder is a defining aspect of the original stock photo.

Admittedly, this Red Dead Redemption 2 photo is not a perfect recreation of the meme. The positioning of the characters is incorrect, for example. If the meme were being followed exactly, Arthur Morgan would be placed in the center of the shot, with Brother Dorkins on the right. The boy with the crucifix would also be walking forward as opposed to being at an angle. This inconsistency quickly led to a debate in the comments, with the two sides arguing over whether this was really a meme reference or just a coincidence.

However, most Red Dead Redemption 2 fans seem to agree that this is a proper reference. Commenters like Qritical point out that the meme was beginning to take off the year before Red Dead Redemption 2 released, making it more likely for a developer to sneak the reference in. However, the more damning piece of evidence comes courtesy of SergeantSchmidt, as the gamer points out that this face was never made by Dorkins during the mission. As such, it was deliberately added for the photo, likely to complete the Western version of Distracted Boyfriend.

While this is a lot different from the usual Red Dead Redemption 2 details, it is easily one of the most humorous. With not many people picking up on it, either, perhaps fans should look more closely at the images for the game’s missions going forward.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
