An Overwatch fan proposes to their partner using a miniature loot box, to celebrate the game that brought them together in the first place.

Online gaming is often a great way to bring people together, whether by meeting people in matchmaking or in the chats of various streaming platforms dedicated to video games. While many wouldn't think of a competitive FPS like Overwatch as setting the right romantic mood for meeting their significant other, a couple who met through their mutual love of the game have recently become engaged, posting the ingenious Overwatch themed proposal to Reddit for fans to appreciate.

Matchmaking in competitive shooters isn't generally the environment in which love blossoms, though, Overwatch can be the place death blossoms, but usually, love is the last thing on anyone's mind during the calamity of a typical game. For the most part, Overwatch's quickplay mode sees players hop in and out of games at a fast rate, with lobbies rarely lasting more than a few games, while ranked is often a more serious environment where players are often more focused on securing a win than on socializing.

For Redditor funkyfunyuns, Overwatch proved to be the perfect place to interact with their now-fiancée, their relationship being forged in the fires of Blizzard's competitive shooter. It seemed apt then, that funkyfunyuns' partner should propose using a loot box containing a beautiful custom-made sapphire engagement ring. Funkyfunyuns posted an image of the tiny hand-crafted Overwatch loot box with the message "Almost four years ago, I met a guy through Overwatch. Last month, he proposed to me with a loot box." Many pointed out that she was lucky that the box contained a ring at all, with some suggesting it could have been a Torbjorn voice line or a common spray.

The loot box itself is very accurately made, painted black and yellow and styled after the legendary anniversary loot boxes available during Overwatch's anniversary seasonal event. Funkyfunyun's fiancée, Fahrenheit285, also showed up in the Reddit thread, and gave some extra background on how the couple met, stating that they had both joined an online group for Overwatch players who wanted to meet new people and thanks to it being smaller group of players, they "ended up interacting frequently and just kinda went from there."

Funkyfunyun's story is certainly a testament to how online gaming can bring people together, with the couple gaming together for last four years and Fahrenheit285 apparently taking on the support role as a Mercy main. With Overwatch 2 promising to change up the meta when it comes out, the pair will have a whole new set of Overwatch experiences ahead of them, and one can only wish them many wins in the future.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
