The newly announced Nintendo Switch OLED Model comes in one of two colors to choose from: the classic neon red/neon blue or a brand new white color.

After months of rumors and speculation surrounding the fabled Nintendo Switch Pro, Nintendo unexpectedly announced a brand new Nintendo Switch model. Instead of the long suggested Switch Pro name, it's simply called the Nintendo Switch OLED Model and, while it does boast some new features compared to the original, it's not quite what many had expected.

Shortly after dropping the reveal trailer, Nintendo broke down exactly what the OLED Model offers. Not only that, but it also confirmed which colors will be available when it launches on October 8th. The first is, unsurprisingly, the classic neon red/neon blue colors that the original Switch has, with the left Joy-Con colored red and the right one blue. Considering its recognizability and the fact that it matches the primary colors of Nintendo's plumber mascot Mario, it makes sense why Nintendo would distribute the new model in this combination of colors.

The second one, which has predominately been shown in the marketing so far, is a simple, pure white. And unlike the neon red/neon blue one, it comes with a matching dock. This is a brand new color for a Nintendo Switch model, as neither the original Switch nor the handheld-only Switch Lite have come in white.

Some may be disappointed that the OLED model only offers two color choices, but the original Switch only comes in red/blue or black, and owners can always purchase different colored Joy-Con. And plus, special editions for games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Fortnite have come with their own unique colorations, so it wouldn't be surprising if Nintendo made new options for the OLED model available in the future. Especially since Nintendo has some major releases planned for after the OLED model launches.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, for example, will be releasing this November, so a new Pokemon-themed model would make a lot of sense. The new model will also be launching on the same day as Metroid Dread, the all-new 2D title announced at E3 2021. Nintendo choosing to release both products on the same day can't be a coincidence; perhaps it's planning to sell a special bundle containing the model and the game, with the dock to sport a Metroid design.

But fans are likely more disappointed with the OLED model's specs than the limited color options. Many of the Switch Pro reports suggested that the new model would support 4K resolution, indicating that it would be much more powerful than the original model. As today's announcement has already demonstrated, 4K support is not among the OLED model's capabilities.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Model launches on October 8th.
