Likable companions are essential to any action JRPG, and Scarlet Nexus is full of them - here are the game's companions ranked by tier.

In a year with some strong anime games, Scarlet Nexus has proven to be a formidable entry for fans of the action JRPG genre. With its flashy combat and story full of twists and turns, it is a must-play for fans of titles like Final Fantasy 7 RemakeCode Vein, and the Tales series. One of the best parts of these games is getting to know the companions and teammates that will be with the player along their journey. Scarlet Nexus breaks the story into discrete sections and allows the player to take a break between them to hang out with their crew.

By hanging out with the various OSF teammates that Yuito and Kasane pick up throughout Scarlet Nexus' dual narrative, the player gets a good understanding of what makes each person tick. Additionally, the characters get stronger SAS powers if the player gives them enough gifts and spends enough time with them, so no matter what each player is going to have their favorites. While some characters are excellent, others don't shine as brightly.

Hanabi Ichijo - No matter which protagonist the player chooses to play as first, Hanabi's kindness is something that shines through Scarlet Nexus' story. While she clearly likes Yuito as more than a childhood best friend, she isn't nice to him for that reason alone. She's nice to him because she treats everyone she meets with kindness and understanding. On top of that, her pyrokinetic abilities make her a top-tier pick for anyone looking for the heat of romance and the burn of a flaming bo staff.

Gemma Garrison - Gemma is another lovable character who really grows on the player throughout the story no matter which protagonist they choose. Despite being older than most of the other characters, he still is full of heart and determination, making him something of the "Dad" of the Yuito Platoon. Paired with an incredibly useful SAS ability that makes the player invincible for a short period of time, Gemma is the type of character who could get an anime all to himself.

Kagero Donne - Kagero has many strengths, but his personality is certainly one of his strongest selling points. He's the kind of person who really knows how to let his hair down and enjoy life as it happens. He spends much of his "bond episodes" with Yuito and Kasane teaching them how to unwind after their stressful missions. The only reason he doesn't qualify for S-Tier is that his SAS power of invisibility doesn't have as much offensive practicality as others on the list.

Arashi Spring - Similar to Kagero, Arashi is a master at relaxing, but sometimes slacks off a little too much. Her relationship with her brother, Fubuki, is an interesting aspect of the plot as he's such a major player in the game's events. Her real strength lies in her SAS ability, hypervelocity, which allows the player to slow down time to catch fast enemies and make the most out of their attacks. While she might be irritating to some because of the way she badgers the player for help, her SAS ability more than makes up for it.

Luca Travers - Despite his small stature, Luca is a Septentrion, one of the most powerful classes of OSF warriors. His fighting skills aren't his only asset, however, as he's greatly intelligent too. When the player first meets Luca, he comes across as a little uptight, but after learning more about his struggles and background toward the end of Scarlet Nexus, particularly about his relationship with his brother Karen, he opens up and becomes a good friend. Additionally, his teleportation SAS power makes him useful for finding resources and loot while also being a good offensive pick in battles.

Tsugumi Nazar - Although she's quite shy at the start of the game, Tsugumi is a lovely companion to talk to and interact with in Scarlet Nexus. Her love of gardening and kindness make her endearing to just about everyone, however she ranks lower than most because of her SAS power. The SAS power clairvoyance allows the player to see invisible enemies or enemies concealing themselves through different methods, but that's about it. The invisible enemy types are more annoying than challenging, making the need to use her ability something of a nuisance. Unfortunately, that makes her less than ideal for combat.

Kyoka Eden - Without going into spoilers, Kyoka starts the game off as kindhearted and powerful but gets dealt a relatively bad hand after some plot twists, resulting in her being sidelined for the second half of the game. She's still around and part of Kasane Platoon, but loses some of the things that made her cool to begin with. The plot twists make her situation interesting, but unfortunately don't really add to her overall character arc. She does have a useful SAS power, duplication, that allows the player to do more damage with their telekinetic abilities.

Shiden Ritter - Even though he has a useful SAS ability, Shiden just isn't very nice, so hanging out with him feels like a chore. His hostility is bred from insecurity, but that doesn't give him the right to be so mean all the time. Over time, he learns to work better with Kasane Platoon, but he never really drops the attitude when interacting with people he doesn't respect. His electrokinesis SAS power is just as good as Hanabi's pyrokinesis, but he's arguably ruined by his sour attitude. He's only a good pick if the player needs something shocked and doesn't mind being berated with insults.

Scarlet Nexus is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
