Ubisoft confirms development on the ambitious 'Assassin's Creed Infinity' project, a massive evolving world with multiple settings

It seems with recent Assassin's Creed games that Ubisoft is pushing the size and scope of the franchise's potential, and recently several fans debated this feature when it was confirmed that the next Assassin's Creed game would be bigger. Now, it seems fans know a little more about what that project entails: it is in development at Ubisoft under the codename Assassin's Creed Infinity.

Assassin's Creed Infinity is a massive online platform, with an evolving world, multiple settings, and live-service elements. Reported by Bloomberg, Assassin's Creed Infinity is the franchise's most ambitious project to date, as it will continue to expand for months and years after its release, adding and building onto the game's plethora of settings.

According to Bloomberg, a Ubisoft spokeswoman wouldn't discuss Assassin's Creed Infinity at length, but stated that the aim for Ubisoft is to "exceed the expectations of fans who have been asking for a more cohesive approach." It remains to be seen exactly what that means, but many fans were hoping for more classic gameplay and a return to the Assassin vs. Templar conflict—something a live service game may be able to deliver on, if done right. Either way, Assassin's Creed Infinity's release date is years away and would make sense given Valhalla's continued support.

Individual games, or components, of Assassin's Creed Infinity might look, feel, and potentially play different, but they will all be connected to the core idea of the project. As such, with this in mind, it's no surprise that inspiration for the game comes from Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto 5, live-service platforms that have kept players' attention for years. Assassin's Creed Infinity will try to be the same, but for the AC community. How, what, and if it takes anything directly from these platforms is up in the air, but it's unlikely to be a battle royale or heist-style platform.

To accomplish this, Ubisoft has unified the Montreal and Quebec studios to collaborate on Assassin's Creed Infinity. Each will have its own creative director, but Quebec will be in charge of the project. According to Bloomberg sources, there has always been a rivalry between the two studios, and that is likely to create some small internal issues. Overall, there is still a lot not known about the Assassin's Creed Infinity project, and it'll be interesting to see how fans react. A lot of it may boil down to how exactly the overall project works, how it does its presumable microtransactions, and how it captures the identity of the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Infinity is in development for unspecified platforms.
