A Nintendo marketing representative tells a Switch fan to stick with the original model if the new model's OLED screen isn't a game-changer.

A new version of the Nintendo Switch console, the Switch OLED, is due to arrive in October. This new Switch features the first upgrades to Nintendo's widely popular console since it debuted five years ago, but not everyone feels that these upgrades are enough to make the Switch OLED stand out from its predecessor. While consumers and industry specialists debate the pros and cons of upgrading to the Switch OLED, a Nintendo rep has come out with his opinion on purchasing the new console.

The key feature that separates the Switch OLED from the original Switch is its 7 inch OLED screen, which aims to provide gamers with a slightly bigger screen and better contrast for improved visuals. Improved internal speakers and a more versatile kickstand that looks a whole lot better than the flimsy one on the original Switch round out the complete set of improvements. The Switch OLED will also have a new model color, but the console's performance compared to its predecessor will be basically the same. This has some consumers wondering if it's worth putting down $350 for the latest and greatest Switch experience.

According to Nintendo marketing manager JC Rodrigo, a consumer's decision to buy the Switch OLED will likely be based on how important the 7 inch screen is to them. When a fan on Twitter asked him about the new console's potential performance improvements, he responded with the shortened phrase, "not what's for." He elaborated further by advising current Nintendo Switch owners to stick with the console they already have unless they feel particularly drawn to the OLED screen.

So far it seems the prevailing opinion is that the Switch OLED will be the best purchase for those who don't already own a Switch but are ready to jump into the market. There's a $50 price bump over the original Switch, but many feel the screen improvements and the assurance of optimal battery life since Nintendo silently upgraded the original Switch system are worth the $50. But it's a tougher decision for consumers who already own a Switch. The Switch OLED isn't the rumored Switch Pro, and unless consumers aren't able to achieve better display quality via docked mode, it may be best to hold off for now.

While it may be surprising to hear a Nintendo representative speak so bluntly about the company's newest tech, it's just reinforcing what many people have already concluded about the Switch OLED. It's a slightly upgraded console that will no doubt satisfy that new purchase feeling, but unless the Switch OLED's screen is the primary draw, fans may be better off waiting until a Nintendo console comes out with an all-around improved toolset.

The Nintendo Switch OLED releases on October 8.
