Sony reveals one of the free PS Plus games for August 2021 ahead of schedule, but this is when the rest will likely be announced.

PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play the online multiplayer for PlayStation games, and while that's one of the main benefits, there are many other reasons to be signed up for Sony's service. Not only does it allow PlayStation gamers on PS4 and PS5 to play online, but it also nets them various discounts in addition to a set of free games every month. And since the launch of the PS5 last November, the free PS Plus games have included one PS5 title and two PS4 games.

When it comes to the free PS Plus games for any given month, Sony has established a pattern with how the games are announced. For the most part, the company announces the free PS Plus games on the same day every month, and there's no reason to think that things will be different when it comes to the free PS Plus games for August 2021 reveal. That being said, PS Plus subscribers do know of at least one of the free PS Plus games for August 2021 ahead of time.

Here's when PS Plus subscribers will likely learn about the other free games for August 2021.

Assuming Sony sticks to its usual pattern, the free PS Plus games for August 2021 will have their full reveal on the last Wednesday of the month. That means PS Plus subscribers can likely look forward to the free PS Plus games for August 2021 being revealed on Wednesday, July 28. Sometime that morning, Sony is virtually guaranteed to reveal the full PS Plus lineup for the following month, which will likely consist of three games.

The free PS Plus games for August 2021 announcement will be made on the PlayStation Blog and Sony's various social media channels. Sometimes the free PS Plus games will differ by region, like in the instances where some countries randomly get a bonus game, but for the most part PS Plus subscribers should be able to expect the offerings to be the same across the board.

The full lineup for the free PS Plus games for August 2021 will likely be unveiled on Wednesday, July 28. They will then become available for PS Plus subscribers to claim on the first Tuesday of August, which is Tuesday, August 3. At that point the free PS Plus games for July 2021 (and the June 2021 holdover Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown Edition) will be cycled out to make room for the new games. So anyone that wants to claim the free PS Plus games for July 2021 still has about a month to do so.

While PS Plus subscribers will most likely have to wait until July 28 to find out the full PS Plus games for August 2021 lineup, they actually already know of one game that will be coming to the service.

As it so happens, Sony has already announced one of the free PS Plus games for August 2021 well ahead of schedule. At its State of Play event, Sony confirmed that the battle royale game Hunter's Arena: Legends will be one of the free PS Plus games for August 2021. Sony did something similar a few months ago when it confirmed Oddworld: Soulstorm as a free PS Plus game, and so it's starting to set a precedent that these events will give fans sneak peeks at the PS Plus lineups.

It was confirmed during the State of Play event that PS Plus subscribers will be able to claim Hunter's Arena: Legends across both PS4 and PS5. This means that the game likely counts as the PS5 offering for the free PS Plus lineup, as the Worms Rumble battle royale found itself in a similar situation. However, it's always possible that Hunter's Arena: Legends is really considered one of the two free PS4 games for August 2021, but that seems highly unlikely.

When it comes to the free PS Plus games for PS5, almost all of them have been brand new releases. In fact, one of the only exceptions to that rule is when shark-RPG Maneater was a free PS Plus game. Considering this, it seems the more likely scenario is that Hunter's Arena: Legends is the free PS5 PS Plus game, and subscribers still have two PS4 games to look forward to in the meantime.

As for what Hunter's Arena: Legends is, the game is a battle royale title that's been playable on PlayStation in beta form. The game is different from most battle royale titles in that it has a bigger focus on melee combat and a PvPvE setup. Not only do Hunter's Arena: Legends players have to fight other players to be the last one standing, but they must also contend with AI-controlled demons as well. When Hunter's Arena: Legends officially launches on August 3 as a PS Plus game, players will have Solo and Trios matchmaking options.

With Hunter's Arena: Legends being a multiplayer-centric game, it will be interesting to see if the other free PS Plus games for August 2021 scratch a similar itch or if they are something completely different. Fans will find out when they are revealed, which will most likely be on Wednesday, July 28.
