A small team of Fallout 76 players are working on a mod to turn Fallout 76 into a massive, ambitious open-world Star Wars fangame.

Fallout 76 is no stranger to modding, with official mod support on its way and fans figuring out ways to make mods work in current versions. Most mods make small changes, but the team behind the SWOW project have made it clear their ambitions lie at a high standard.

Fallout 76 is infamous for having launched with many issues, and the playerbase continues to have problems with the game to this day. Some users have taken it upon themselves to fix problems, add more content or create entirely new experiences inside the game through modding.

Even with Bethesda's long-delayed mod support promises, a small team of Fallout 76 players have set out to create the Star Wars game of their dreams using the gameplay, engine, and mechanics of Fallout 76 as a base. The current showcases reveal promising glimpses into the project. Areas that appear very similar to iconic Star Wars locales like Coruscant are shown, with details like the flying vehicles between buildings and massive skyscrapers looking very impressive for a mod this early in development.

The mod is currently being created with Karim Najib working as designer and mentor, and Tank_Girl444 handling development. There is no download for the mod itself yet, but there is a design document outlining plans for the project. Fortunately for those looking for more Fallout content soon, the modding community doesn't end with Star Wars Open World; also soon to offer a wealth of content is the less ambitious but still impressive DLC-sized Fallout London mod.

The design document makes it abundantly clear within the first few pages that no money is being made from the project, likely to appease Disney's lawyers who may shut down a fan project otherwise. Star Wars is a big name in several entertainment industries, and much like Nintendo shuts down fan projects, Disney may shut down the Star Wars Open World mod if its legal team decides it is a big enough infringement. That would be disappointing, however, as SWOW is shaping up to be an incredibly impressive mod and it would be a shame to see it shut down so early on.

Star Wars Open World's already impressive showcases and design document make it evident that the team is serious about developing the project further. There is a note left on the team's name list indicating they may be looking for more developers, who will hopefully contribute to an even fuller experience. Given Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's various issues, a fan attempt at a Star Wars game motivated by passion rather than money could make for an interesting experience in the end.

Fallout 76 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
