A glitch tied to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's Photo Mode results in an uncomfortable but fascinating look at one of the game's Asari characters.

A fan of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition has discovered an unfortunate glitch in the game's Photo Mode impacting an Asari character. While Photo Mode normally gives players a chance to see favorite Mass Effect characters up-close, this is likely taking it too far.

Few races in the Mass Effect series are as iconic as the Asari, the blue-skinned, all-female race that dominates much of the Milky Way's political and scientific discourse. Many players will likely think of the brilliant Liara T'Soni when they think of the Asari; not only is she a popular romance option, but Liara will be part of Mass Effect 4 in some capacity. Still, even Liara is not above unflattering glitches making her look strange or even scary.

As shared by Reddit user Grizzlei, zooming in on Liara in the game's Photo Mode exposes an eyeball and teeth, among other parts of her head. While it's fascinating to see Liara's full eyeball, the overall effect is quite disturbing. Fans might not clamor for Liara T'Soni statues and other merchandise if they saw her looking like this. At the very least, leaving Photo Mode would return the game back to normal, letting players look at Liara's full face instead.

It's oddly fitting that Liara looks scary as a result of the glitch, as she routinely strikes fear into the hearts of many characters in the game universe. Although few people would consider Liara to be a scary or intimidating character in most circumstances, those on her bad side likely don't have long to live. This is particularly true after Liara's ascension to the position of Shadow Broker towards the end of Mass Effect 2, when she gains quite a bit of power in the galaxy's underworld.

That said, it's probably for the best that the image focuses on Liara, rather than more sinister Asari characters like Mass Effect 2's secret party member Morinth. Given that Morinth will actually kill Shepard during an intimate moment if given the chance, it would be alarming to see a zoomed-in look at Morinth's eye. After all, anyone in the position to see something similar in the game universe would probably perish very shortly thereafter.

For a more positive spin on the image, it serves to reinforce just how human the Asari really look. The teeth and eyeball could easily come from one of the game's human characters. While some in-game races clearly look quite alien, such as Mass Effect's sloth-like elcor and jellyfish-like hanar, others share human-like eyes, teeth, and body shape. Of course, the Asari still have some distinctly un-humanlike traits, like their long lifespans and unique mating behavior.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
