Loki producer Eric Martin offers fans behind-the-scenes insight into how episode 5 was created, along with information on deleted scenes.

Episode 5 of Loki premiered this week and had fans on the edge of their seats once again with several new reveals, twists, and Easter eggs. Eric Martin, co-producer and writer of the show, took to social media the day after the episode premiered to share several interesting details on the fifth episode of the popular Disney Plus series.

Fans got to meet the multiple Variants who briefly appeared in the post-credits scene of Loki episode 4, one of which was an alligator, along with a whole bunch of bandits and President Loki. The giant smoke monster Alioth made an appearance and the concept of the Void was finally explained. While the episode was exciting on its own, Martin offers a lot of behind-the-scenes insight into how it was created.

One of the most talked-about elements of the fifth episode was the appearance of Alligator Loki. After the episode premiered, director Kate Herron shared a picture of an alligator soft toy, which was apparently a “diva” on set. Turns out, it was a lot more than that. Martin revealed that it was, in fact, used as part of the action and shared pictures of DeObia Oparei, who plays Boastful Loki in the series, holding the plushy during a scene. Apparently “nothing was funnier than that absurd plushy” during that shoot as it brought on a few good laughs.

Another moment that fans had been waiting for since the first trailer premiered was the appearance of President Loki. The arrogant Variant was wonderfully played by Tom Hiddleston and his obnoxious attitude was just the right amount of comic relief that fans needed in the otherwise stressful episode. Turns out that Hiddleston spent the entire night before that scene was shot to come up with “all sorts of hilarious alternate lines,” but the team eventually settled on “beef-witted, half-faced scrub.” While most of the episode took place outdoors, it turns out most of it was shot inside a sound stage. Production designer Kasra Farahani was tasked to bring in “tons of dirt and grass from a nearby field” and managed to create the Void indoors. Each scene was then shot from a different angle to ensure that there was no repetition of frames.

Apart from episode details, Martin also confirmed that some scenes had to be deleted from the final edit of the series. The sad part is that they sound extremely fun and would have been loved by the fans. One of the scenes deleted from episode 5 included all the Loki Variants showing up to confront Alioth because they couldn’t allow the original “Loki [to] outshine them.” After their little tiff in the Loki Palace, it would have been really entertaining to watch the Loki Variants fight each other over who ultimately defeats Alioth.

Another scene that had to be removed was much earlier in the season. Frog Thor makes a brief appearance in Loki, but it turns out that he was supposed to show up in episode 1 while Agent Mobius interrogates Loki in the Time Theatre. The scene included the God of Mischief “getting pummeled by Frog Thor,”  but it had to be removed. That’s another unfortunate circumstance as it would have made for great comedy. Even Martin agrees that “Tom was funny as hell” in the scene.

Loki is now streaming on Disney Plus.
