Piplup is among the various starter Pokemon that players can find in greater quantities during Pokemon GO's current anniversary event.

Pokemon GO players are able to participate in the game's current anniversary event up until Thursday, July 15th at 8:00 PM in players' local times. This event includes various challenges and special increased spawn rates for certain Pokemon. One of these Pokemon is Piplup, the Water-type starter from the Sinnoh region.

While all of the starter Pokemon that are currently implemented into Pokemon GO are available through this event, some have different methods of obtaining than others. This is especially important for players looking to complete the anniversary event's collection challenge and earn its rewards.

When looking for Piplup, players won't be able to normally find one by walking around or using incenses. Luckily, there are multiple other ways to enter an encounter with this Pokemon and catch one. Some players may even be fortunate enough to encounter a shiny Piplup.

If players want to catch Piplup in the overworld, they will need to use a lure on a PokeStop. By doing so, Piplup will be among the lure's spawning Pokemon. Other Pokemon exclusive lures for this event include Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Turtwig, Chimchar, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. In order to increase the odds of Piplup specifically appearing, players are recommended to use a Rainy Lure or a Glacial Lure due to Piplup being a pure Water-type Pokemon.

While using lures can be inconvenient, this event has increased the number of times lures will be active during it. Because of this, all lures will last an hour, no matter what type it is. This additionally makes searching for Pokemon with other players much more valuable since all players benefit from a placed lure, not just the placing player.

The other way to encounter Piplup is by completing a specific field research task obtained during the anniversary event. This field research task is the "Make five Great Throws" task that can be obtained via any PokeStop. Players should note that Piplup isn't the only possible reward for this task, however, with Chimchar and Turtwig also having the chance to appear as the reward encounter instead.

After catching Piplup, it will require 25 Piplup candies in order to evolve it into Prinplup. This Pokemon can then be evolved into its final form, Empoleon, with 100 more Piplup candies. Empoleon is a dual Water and Steel-type Pokemon that is only weak to Fighting, Ground, and Electric-type moves. It additionally resists damage from Dragon, Psychic, Normal, Water, Bug, Rock, Flying, Fairy, Steel, Ice, and Poison-type moves.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
