Dark Souls 2 players need the Fragrant Branch of Yore item in order to reach certain areas that are blocked off by petrified NPCs and enemies.

Of the many oddities to be found in Dark Souls 2, the Fragrant Branch of Yore item is one of the more interesting ones. In order to stop players from getting into certain areas, petrified NPCs and enemies can be found in front of doorways or holding onto levers. To get past this obstacle, players have to use a Fragrant Branch of Yore and unpetrify the victim. Naturally, this doesn't always work out well for the player, as some of these recently unpetrified characters don't show any gratitude and will immediately attack the player.

Fragrant Branches of Yore are the only way to unpetrify characters, so players will need quite a few of them in order to get around to the various areas of Dark Souls 2. The locations and number of these items are different in the original game and the Scholar of the First Sin version, and this guide will cover the latter.

  • One can be found in the Shaded Ruins in a chest
  • One can be found in Brightstone Cove Tseldora as a drop from the hollowed Duke in the Lord's Private Chamber after beating The Duke's Dear Freyja

  • The second one in the Undead Crypt is in a chest right before players find Velstadt

After obtaining the King's Ring in Dark Souls 2, the final three can be found:

  • One is found in the Forest of Fallen Giants behind the King's on a corpse hanging from a ledge
  • One is found in Aldia's Keep on a Mimic in the last cage before the boss room
  • The final branch is found in the Dragon Shrine in a chest after Dragonfang Villard
