Square Enix randomly releases an update for the PC version of Final Fantasy 13, fueling speculation that it could be joining Game Pass soon.

Microsoft has made its intentions clear when it comes to the Final Fantasy franchise and Xbox Game Pass. Numerous main series Final Fantasy games are currently available to play on Xbox Game Pass, with plans already announced to bring the remaining titles to the service at some point down the line. This will include the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy of games, and it seems that they may be making their Game Pass debuts sooner rather than later.

As noted by Eurogamer, Square Enix has suddenly released a new update for the PC version of Final Fantasy 13 that addresses a lingering issue with Lightning's voice cutting out in some of the game's scenes. This update has led to speculation that Square Enix is preparing Final Fantasy 13 for its Xbox Game Pass debut, which could very well include both the PC and console versions of the game.

When Final Fantasy 13 does come to Xbox Game Pass, it will be interesting to see if it's joined by its sequels or if they will come a little later. As some may recall, Final Fantasy 13 had two sequels, Final Fantasy 13-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13. None of the games managed to reach the same heights as their predecessors in terms of review scores or fan admiration, but perhaps the FF13 titles will get a new lease on life through Xbox Game Pass.

While Final Fantasy 13 reviews were mostly positive at the time of the game's release, it didn't escape criticism. The main points of contention people had with the game revolved around its story and linear progression, with it not really opening up until many hours into the experience. Final Fantasy 13's battle system was somewhat divisive as well, with some that praised and others who felt like it was too hands-off.

Final Fantasy 13's Xbox Game Pass release won't be addressing these issues. It will simply make the game playable through the service. However, this new Final Fantasy 13 update does show that Square Enix is still willing to fix some of the lingering technical problems that the game has. If there are still problems with the console release, it's entirely possible that Square Enix will issue another patch to address them, though that remains to be seen.

Xbox Game Pass users waiting for Final Fantasy 13 to join the service have other FF games they can check out in the meantime. The original Final Fantasy 7 is currently on Game Pass, as is Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster, among others.

Final Fantasy 13 is out now for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
