The Suicide Squad featurette offers fans insight into the cameras used for filming and how they made shooting action sequences easier.

The wait is almost over for the DC Extended Universe’s next project The Suicide Squad and with a little less than one month before the film finally hits theaters, a new featurette offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at how it was shot. Shared by director James Gunn and RED Digital Cinema on social media, the two-minute exclusive clip offers insight into the RED cameras used for filming and some never-before-seen footage from the highly anticipated flick.

In the featurette, Gunn and The Suicide Squad's director of photography, Henry Braham, break down some of the scenes and the cinematography involved. It is interesting to see how involved the team behind the camera is in bringing every scene to life. From getting drenched to getting up close and personal with the stars, the crew seems to have done it all to make The Suicide Squad a reality

A lot of the scenes covered in the featurette appear to be a challenge to shoot, but it seems like the new RED cameras helped Gunn and his team move around easily, allowing them to capture all that was required. RED is a range of professional digital cinema cameras, and it seems like they are much smaller than the traditional ones used on a film set. But, the size doesn’t compromise on the high quality of filming. There are several shots of the different equipment used during the shooting of The Suicide Squad, most of which are handheld, allowing the team to shoot different angles of the same scene with great ease.

“The way that this movie is shot is the way I wanted to shoot every movie in my brain and haven’t been able to until this film,” Gunn is heard saying in the featurette. In the past, Gunn had confirmed that he had complete creative freedom when it came to The Suicide Squad, without any interference from the studio. Warner Bros. has received a lot of critical feedback from fans in the past for interfering in its films, which began when the studio ordered reshoots of several Justice League scenes after Zack Snyder left the project.

It seems like Gunn had a lot of fun filming The Suicide Squad since he refers to the film as the “most enjoyable process” he has been through. Part of it has to do with the fact that he was able to get the shots that he wanted easily. “We were always getting exactly what I envisioned, sometimes better than what I envisioned,” he states in the featurette. As it turns out, they wanted to get up close to the actors in many of the scenes, especially the action sequences, which Gunn states wouldn’t have been possible with bolted cameras.

If Gunn had so much fun making the film, it would be interesting to see how great it turns out to be. Needless to say, fan expectations are extremely high.

The Suicide Squad premieres in theaters in the US and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
