Black Widow almost featured a cameo from an Avenger, but director Cate Shortland wanted Scarlett Johansson's Natasha to be independent.

Rumors seem to travel at the speed of light when it comes to the MCU fan base. Like an archaeologist, fans are constantly excavating the hidden details that have been covered. The MCU’s fan base is so skilled at digging up rumors that even the co-writer of Black Widow, Eric Pearson, is continuously stunned at the information fans can get their hands on. One of the latest bits of information that Pearson addressed was the idea that Black Widow, at some point, had nearly featured another Avenger in a cameo.

The Avenger that almost made their way onto the screen in a quick flash was none other than Iron Man himself. Pearson was so taken aback by the rumors that he almost started to believe that it was true himself, leading to great confusion as he tried to figure out just how this information was found.

Pearson stated in an interview with ComicBook.com, “I remember when those rumors came out I was in London in our War Room office and I just looked around and was like ‘Are we?’ Am I supposed to be? I have the script right here, Tony Stark’s not in it.” Although Pearson has denied the fact that Tony Stark was ever in the script, he doubled back and admitted that the script written before him did briefly mention Stark. Pearson added, “I feel bad for the person who asked me this the other day because I said, there was never any discussion, but I do remember now that one version of the script prior to me literally had written into it, ‘The end moment of Civil War with Tony and Natasha,' but it was old footage.”

Pearson goes on to explain that Stark’s brief presence in the script was really nothing more than a sign to let fans know that the current time in the movie marked the end of the Civil War. However, the idea that Robert Downey Jr. would be once again showing up on the screen is confusing considering the very public goodbye that he proclaimed after Avengers: Endgame. Not only did RDJ say goodbye to his character, but also made it known that his time with the MCU was coming to a close.

So, Pearson went on to express that it was nearly impossible that RDJ would have been featured in a cameo in Black Widow. One of the main reasons that another Avenger was not featured in Black Widow was because the director wanted to make sure that Natasha was independent, fully in her power without the need of any assistance, especially from a man. Black Widow director Cate Shortland has already stated that she and Kevin Feige agreed that it was important to show Natasha didn't need her male Avengers cohorts for support.

Producer of the MCU, Kevin Feige, was adamant about having no Avenger characters present in Black Widow. In this respect, Black Widow's lack of an Avenger cameo was intentional and always part of the plan, despite the rumors circulating from fans.

Black Widow is now in theaters and available for streaming on Disney Plus Premier Access.
