Even with such a long-lived series as One Piece, the anime has to turn to filler at times. However, these episodes can still be spectacular.

Eiirchiro Oda's One Piece has surpassed 1000 chapters of manga and 900 episodes of anime. Every little detail has the potential to become a major plot point at some point in the story, which keeps fans on their toes. Because of this, it's sometimes difficult to tell the difference from canon stories and filler in the anime.

Some filler episodes and arcs are definitely more annoying and slower than others, but there're tons of great ones that impact the viewer's greater understanding of One Piece. They feature great character moments, deep world building, and exciting fights that aren't featured in the manga.

10 "Infamous Pirate Hunter! The Wandering Swordsman, Zoro!"

Though Zoro has been around almost since the beginning of One Piece, he remains mysterious. He consistently ranks 2nd on popularity polls, so it's safe to say he's a fan favorite. Yet, fans don't know much about him. His backstory is deep, but only the shallow parts have been made clear, and the same goes for his morals. This episode shows more about Zoro's thinking process and what he values.

Seeing the side of Zoro that protects the weak and searches for strong opponents is powerful, and something One Piece should show more of. Zoro's outside appearance strongly contradicts his inner feelings, and that's what draws fans to him.

9 "Burning Roller Race! Dash Into The Final Round!"

The Davy Back fight against the Foxy Pirates is a short arc of One Piece, filled with comical moments and unusual fights for the series. The anime added an extra challenge and other moments to fill the time. New moments feature Nico Robin as well, which helps to flesh out her character since she doesn't get many big moments before this arc.

The Davy Back fight is unlike any other arc in One Piece, so it can definitely keep viewers interested and laughing all the while. Adding small moments to a small arc is a great way to hide filler.

8 "A Heartbreaking Duel - Luffy Vs. Sanji - Part 1"

The conflict on Whole Cake Island is an emotional one. Every main character involved must face something from their past and reevaluate what's truly important to them for their future. The fight between Luffy and Sanji ends even quicker than it starts. It's interesting to see how the anime handles it.

In the anime, there's more backstory added to the fight for context and emotional weight. Filler is done well when it has an actual purpose in the series as opposed to just filling time. Thus, these additions made for a nice change that fans couldn't complain about.

7 "Luffy Dies at Sea!? The Pirate Alliance Comes Apart"

This episode is full of interesting plot points never mentioned in the manga, and flows well from the events of the original story. After the crew leaves Punk Hazard with Caesar Clown as a hostage, he gets kidnapped. The crew has to get him back to negotiate with Doflamingo later on.

In this episode, Luffy and Trafalgar Law are forced to fight each other and some animal friends from earlier in the series. Animals fighting against humans is interesting, since they've been seen to be extremely intelligent and more than capable at fighting.

6 "So Long Marine Base! The Final Battle For Freedom"

As the final episode of the G8 arc, this filler story fills its viewers with optimism. It also leaves them with a lesson not featured in any other arc of One Piece up to this point. The Marines in this world are there to preserve law and order while keeping people safe. However, their overall goal as an organization is much more sinister.

This episode follows the point of view of a Marine whose desire to do good in the world contradicts what he's been told to enforce. His morality clashes with his duties as he interacts with the Straw Hats in an intellectual chase and series of battles.

5 "Luffy And Sanji's Desperate Decision! Large Rescue Maneuvers!"

Also in the G8 arc, this episode highlights some new character interactions . Luffy and Sanji don't interact alone much outside of gags before the time skip, and this episode uses that to its advantage. It sticks the two together as they try to escape the marine base.

Filler episodes can be powerful tools when used this way, since they open up doors that remain locked in the manga. They expose the viewer to different points of view on characters and their interactions. This whole arc is written well enough to be a real arc in One Piece, and it's because of strong episodes like this one.

4 "I'll Make it Bloom! Manly Usopp's Eight-Shaku Ball"

Usopp is a fan favorite character for many One Piece viewers, and this filler episode highlights the most admirable part of him. The story takes place during the Post-Alabasta arc, so it has no bearing on the overall story. Still, it's full of touching and cool moments for the Straw Hat Sniper.

Usopp shines best when he stands up for his friends and loved ones, fighting back the cowardice that plagues him constantly. In this episode, he does just that, helping a young girl achieve her dreams of lighting a legendary firework and lighting up the whole island.

3 "A Hungry Front - Luffy and the Marine Rookies!"

Few arcs serve such a smooth transition as the Marine Rookie arc does. Usually the Straw Hats stumble into an island for reasons that exist outside of the manga, and they run with it for the remainder of the arc.

This arc follows the events precisely, and adds in extra moments to flesh out new characters and the world of One Piece as a whole. For this reason, anime only fans probably didn't even notice that this arc was filler at all since it flows so naturally in the story.

2 "The Devil's Fist — A Show Down! Luffy vs. Grount"

Following the episodes before it in the Marine Rookie arc, Luffy and company end up battling other marine rookies who are higher up in the command ladder. As the battles escalate, the episode's action grows to the point of almost nonstop fighting. Such action is always welcome in an adventure series with such diverse characters.

Luffy and company don't struggle much against these foes, demonstrating how much they've grown in strength between Whole Cake Island and Zou. Small markers like these are great tools to demonstrate growth, since One Piece tends to be all over the place with its power scaling .

1 "Special Edition! - Clash! Luffy vs. the King of Carbonation"

The Cidre Guild arc follows a standard filler arc formula for One Piece, but stands out for a few reasons. In this episode, the callback to a character like Boa Hancock is very welcome since she's an underused character. The action that follows is entertaining to watch.

The fight scenes show just how powerful Hancock is. There's also a cool moment when Luffy meets up with the other members of the Worst Generation, foreshadowing conflicts to come. The biggest clue that this arc is filler is that it has nothing to do with the events unfolding in the main story; however, it's strong enough to keep anyone engaged.
