Like the original game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD requires players to collect a number of materials for upgrading Link's tools and weapons. One of the many treasures players will need to find during the 30 hours of game time of Skyward Sword HD will be the Evil Crystals, which are used in several upgrades.
Materials in Skyward Sword are broken down into two main categories: Bugs and Treasures. Bug are catchable critters that players will need a bug net for and Treasures are basically everything else. Included in Treasures are items like Skyward Sword's Blue Bird Feathers, Evil Crystals also fall into this category. Like most of the other materials, the Evil Crystals are needed for several upgrades during the game.

- Players need one to upgrade the Bug Net to the Big Bug Net
- One Evil Crystal is needed to make the Iron Bow
- Players need to collect two for the Sacred Bow upgrade
- Link can sell them at night to Rupin for 30 Rupees
There are many sources for the Evil Crystals that players will need to complete all the upgrades. Thankfully, players will get several more of them than they will need and can sell the other for Rupees to buy other needed materials from Rupin and the Moonlight Merchant.
Evil Crystals can be won as rewards from two different mini-games: the Clean Cut minigame and the Rickety Coaster minigame. The Clean Cut minigame is found on Bamboo Island, and players will have to cut the Bamboo 20-27 times in order to get the Crystal as a prize. This is easier to do when players upgrade to the Goddess Longsword, but can be done before, perhaps with Link's spin attack.
After completing the Sandship, the shipyard will have a minigame called Rickety Coaster that players can compete in for prizes. A Heart Piece is the best prize possible from this minigame, but players can also get an Evil Skull from this as well.
There are several Treasure chests that contain Evil Crystals, including:
- Chests hidden behind Hookshots during the Sacred Flame Quest in Lanayru
- Skipper's Retreat's chest at the top of the isolated pillar.
- Pirate's Stronghold chest in the cave wall niche.
Beyond chests, there are a few extra ways they can be acquired. The three other ways Skyward Sword HD players can find Evil Crystals are as follows:
- Purchased from the Moonlight Merchant for 100 Rupees
- Dropped by Cursed Bokoblins
- Dropped by Dark Keese
With so many options, gamers should have no issue getting the required crystals as long as they are thorough.
