Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa revealed on social media that production on the long-awaited DCEU sequel has officially commenced in England. Momoa was initially cast as Arthur Curry in 2014 and has appeared in four DCEU projects to date, with Aquaman 2 marking his latest turn as the DC hero.

James Wan’s Aquaman 2 is the direct sequel to 2018’s Aquaman and the thirteenth film in the DCEU. Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are all reprising their roles from the original blockbuster. Pilou Asbaek, who notably played the villainous Euron Greyjoy on Game of Thrones, joined the cast this April. Details on the upcoming blockbuster have been kept under wraps.

Momoa, who helped develop Aquaman 2's script with his writing partner, confirmed on Instagram that he has arrived in London to begin filming the DCEU film. The star expressed his excitement to see Wan and the rest of his cast, and he also revealed that he’ll be dying his hair blonde for the movie. “London calling!…so excited to start Aqua-man 2, we are here! goodbye brown hello blondie!” stated Momoa. The Rock congratulated the star by commenting, “Have a GREAT shoot brother and give James my love. Have fun!!” The sequel is facing high expectations considering the original earned over $1.15 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing DC Comics-based film to date

Aquaman saw Curry defeat his devious half-brother Orm and become the ruler of the undersea Kingdom of Atlantis. The film concluded with Curry sitting on the throne alongside Heard’s Mera. Momoa’s Curry was most recently seen in Zack Synder’s Justice LeagueThe Synder cut was 4 hours long and featured over 150 minutes of unseen footage. The missing footage included extended character interactions, cut subplots, and a dream sequence in which Joker (Jared Leto) talks directly to Batman. The original version of the film was released in 2017, earning mixed reviews from critics and audiences.

DC has several films and HBO Max shows in the works. This summer, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will be available on the streaming platform and in theatres. The BatmanThe FlashShazam! Fury of Gods and The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker are slated to premiere over the next few years. Meanwhile, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam recently wrapped filming in Atlanta. The Dwayne Johnson-led film includes Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as iconic DC hero Dr. Fate/Kent Nelson.

The Rock signed on to play the anti-hero almost a decade ago. The character was originally slated to be featured in 2019’s Shazam!, but DC Films decided to give Black Adam his own franchise. The film is slated to be released in theatres next summer.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in theatres on December 16, 2022.
