In an interview with Game Rant, Frogwares' marketing manager discusses the reasoning behind taking Sherlock Holmes Chapter One to Holmes' youth.

With age comes experience, and Sherlock Holmes Chapter One aims to give fans the opportunity to see that in action. As a younger version of Sherlock just starting out on his adventures, the player will search for clues about what happened to Sherlock's mother. As a fresh detective in the Mediterranean, Sherlock is eager to prove himself as worthwhile in this strange new terrain. Whether he does that or not will be up to the player, whose decisions can affect situations in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. However, if they can rely on Holmes's impressive mental capabilities and their own intuitive sense, they should find the answers they seek.

This isn't the first Sherlock Holmes-inspired game from developer Frogwares, which has at least eight Sherlock titles under its belt spanning multiple variations of the character and setting. Frogwares enjoys the character and it wants to expand upon him in order to get a better understanding of what makes him tick. It's Frogwares' hope that bringing this new, younger version of Sherlock Holmes will be able to put into context why his older self acts the way he does. In an interview with Game Rant, marketing manager Sergey Oganesyan discussed Frogwares' hopes behind going back to a younger version of the character.

Before you even past his last name, people already picture the iconic image of Sherlock Holmes with a magnifying glass and a deerstalker hat, maybe even with John Watson in tow. As a character that has shaped much of modern mystery fiction, it's no surprise that nearly everyone can recognize him. Frogwares loves to keep making Sherlock Holmes games because people recognize the name and associate it with the investigation games the developer wants to make, according to Oganesyan. In Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, the team had an opportunity to go back to the character Frogwares knows so well and expand upon who he is and his early motivations.

"Great characters do not simply exist, they become who they are, and their journey is often interesting."

By showing Sherlock in this game at such a young age, Frogwares has much more freedom with how he interacts with people, including his new companion Jon. It's Frogwares' hope that it can create some context for Holmes' best and worst traits, including everything from his amazing mental palace to his tendency to act misogynistic at times. Sherlock didn't just wake up with all these abilities and a rude streak, he was shaped that way by the world around him.

"In Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Sherry (Sherlock) is a bit of a rebellious, cocky, and arrogant young man who is still in fact trying to figure himself out."

Anyone who's been an adolescent should be able to relate to the younger version of Sherlock, who will be a more brash and arrogant version of himself. As a young man searching for the answers to his mother's death, Holmes will likely have to learn to compose and control himself if he wishes to get answers. It won't be all up to his attitude though, with Sherlock Holmes Chapter One's costume system offering the player the ability to sneak where they aren't allowed undetected.

As the world's greatest detective, the adult Sherlock Holmes is used to walking into a room and knowing everything about it within minutes. However, it wasn't always like that, and at one point in time Sherlock Holmes was just as young and naive as anyone else. Sherlock Holmes Chapter One will be a testament to how far Frogwares can push the canon without breaking it, Oganesyan said, but as it stands the game looks to be a faithful prequel to the novels and pop culture that is already established.

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is slated for release in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
