In an interview with Game Rant ahead of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Frogwares discussed why it keeps making new versions of the character.

The enigmatic detective Sherlock Holmes has seen many versions of himself since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first penned the character. From TV, film, and video games, to cosplays and spin-offs, the world's greatest detective has seen his legend live on across the world. Frogwares has helped keep his legend alive with a number of video games, spanning multiple settings and iterations of the character. With the upcoming Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, the developer is giving players a new look at a younger, more rebellious version of the famous crime solver.

Players will be tasked with finding clues about what happened to Sherlock's mother, while learning about the young man's origins. In a recent interview with Game Rant, Frogwares discussed why it keeps deciding to make new versions of the Sherlock Holmes character. To the developer, it's all about exploring the behaviors and motivations of the famous detective in order to to create a more dynamic mythos. With the upcoming Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Frogwares hopes to bring more context to why Sherlock Holmes has the skills and behaves the way he does, both good and bad.

Sherlock Holmes' name is synonymous with detective, and he has been the basis for many modern investigation dramas. Anytime someone hears the character's name, they picture a man in a deerstalker hat who's lost in mental calculations. This suits the kind of investigation games that Frogwares wants to make so, on top of loving Sherlock Holmes, it sees an opportunity in building games around him. The multiple variations on the characters and settings have also allowed them to test Holmes's skills and behaviors in new ways.

"One is that we really like the character. As people that love investigations, it’s hard not to be drawn to the world’s greatest detective."

Something else that appeals to Frogwares is the parts of Sherlock Holmes that Doyle never covered, as that gives the developer more room to flex their creative muscles. When it comes to subjects like Holmes's parents in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, which the original author only mentions in passing, Frogwares is able to fill in the blanks however it thinks it will best give context to who the man Sherlock is.

"Sherlock Holmes is no different than everyone else. All of us, as we grow up, learn many things that often change and shape us."

Growing in age affects everyone, shaping behavior and actions over the course of their lives. Sherlock Holmes is no exception to the rule and has had his own trials and tribulations that turned him into the world-famous detective he is today. In Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, the player will even get the opportunity to shape Sherlock's future themselves with in-game choices that affect the world. Throughout this look into the younger man's eyes, fans can expect to learn a lot about what makes Sherlock tick from a developer who is suited to tell that story.

With a number of Sherlock Holmes titles under its belt, Frogwares is more than qualified to make Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. The unique look into Sherlock's adolescence may be uncharted waters for the developer, but at this point, Frogwares knows the ins and outs of Holmes almost better than Doyle did. While it is yet to be proven if Frogwares can push this particular mold without breaking it, its long record of successful Sherlock games goes a long way towards proving its chance at commercial success.

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is slated for release in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
