District 9 director Neill Blomkamp announces that he has joined developer Gunzilla Games to help create its unrevealed debut multiplayer shooter.

The grind never stops when it comes to District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. In addition to working on a sequel to the sci-fi film, Blomkamp also has a few new film projects coming down the pipeline. Now, it would seem that the seasoned filmmaker is taking on a larger role in the gaming industry. Recently, it was announced that Blomkamp joined new developer Gunzilla Games as Chief Visionary Officer.

This isn't Blomkamp's first foray into the gaming industry. Back in 2014, the director had plans to direct a Halo TV pilot, though talks more or less fell through. That did little to slow him down, as Blomkamp made a short film for Anthem in 2019 titled "Conviction." In an interview with IGN, he went into detail regarding his role as Chief Visionary Officer. Notably, the film director acknowledged that he's not all experienced in game development and would be working alongside other senior creatives to help make his vision workable.

Blomkamp explained that his role is to act as "an egalitarian version of being a film director." Essentially, the director would be "bringing directorial skills that would be along the lines of the films that I've done before to the aesthetic of the game." That entails working with different parts of the team to decide the best routes forward in regards to design, audio, storytelling, and other narrative elements.

Despite his inexperience as a game developer, Blomkamp still saw his screenwriting expertise as something that could make a game interesting. That aside, he didn't offer any details regarding the project, though he makes it clear that it has no ties to any of his film work. Blomkamp does confirm an interesting comparison - that his narrative role and that of George R.R. Martin on Elden Ring carry a similar purpose.

Blomkamp's main focus as the Chief Visionary Officer is Gunzilla Games' unrevealed, AAA multiplayer shooter that aims to incorporate narrative elements. As a new studio, Gunzilla was set up only last year, beginning pre-production on its first game around the same time. In addition to Blomkamp, the studio also features development talent from other familiar developers such as Crytek, Ubisoft, EA, and more.

While Blomkamp only previously dabbled in the industry, it seems that video games are the next big storytelling medium for him. He likens films and other passive narrative formats to books on a shelf and claims that the more dominant format comes in the form of a highly interactive, three-dimensional world. For Blomkamp, not only will games become what films were in the 20th century, but they'll eventually become the dominant form of cultural entertainment.

Gunzilla Games' unrevealed AAA multiplayer shooter is currently in development.
