One of the trickiest critters to catch is the Dungeness Crab due to its elusive nature and ability to hide in the sand. Here's how to find it!

Swimming in open water can be liberating and relaxing, especially when one takes the time to enjoy nature's beautiful creatures in all their many aquatic forms. This is one of the fun activities that players can get up to in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and can result in some great collection-building opportunities.

By diving, while swimming in the ocean, players can capture Deep-Sea Creatures to donate to the museum, however, this venture will take a while to fully complete, as there is a wide variety of marine life to find in New Horizons. One of the trickiest to catch is the Dungeness Crab due to its elusive nature and ability to hide in the sand. The best way to find one is to learn about them and their environment as well as getting a bit lucky while diving.

While underwater, this crustacean appears as a medium-sized shadow that will move at a relatively slow speed, so players should be able to catch up to it easily.

In the northern waters, one will be able to find this violet critter from November until May, however, for the rest of the year, the Dungeness Crab will only be found in the southern waters of the area.

This species is active during all hours of the day, so regardless of what time one is doing their diving, it should always be possible to potentially find a Dungeness Crab if the player is in the correct area at the correct time of year.

After donning one's wetsuit, jump into the ocean and seek out either the northern or southern waters before doing some diving. Be on the lookout for medium-sized shadows that move at a moderate pace, as these have the best chances of being Dungeness Crabs.

The violet crustaceans being active at all times of the day allows players to continuously search for them without fear of running out of daylight or moonlight. If one gets particularly unlucky with Deep-Sea Creature spawns, this constant biological activity will be even more helpful.

After catching a Dungeness Crab, and countless other critters, players can donate them to the museum to increase the collection and build up a trophy room of sorts. When turning in a Dungeness Crab, this is what Blathers, the museum's director, has to say about it.

"The Dungeness crab wears a pretty fan-shaped shell that's often done up in purple hues. But eye-catching colors aside, this fellow can be surprisingly hard to spot! That's because the Dungeness crab is something of an expert hider. When scared, it plays a nifty trick! That is, it buries itself beneath the sand with impressive speed. "Now you see me, now you don't," it says as it vanishes before your very eyes!"
