A new mod for Fallout 4, called The Wilderness, gets a release and is an ambitious mod which adds a large and somewhat intense quest to the world.

One of the most intriguing things about the Fallout games, especially Fallout 4, is the sheer number of fan mods that are available for it. Even though the games, especially the later ones, are already quite sizeable, some dedicated people have taken on the task of expanding the world even more. Some of the best Fallout 4 mods even have the potential to influence future games in the franchise. Now, yet another person has thrown their ambitious hat into the modding ring with an add-on that makes the game that bit more intense.

Called The Wilderness, this fan-made mod for Fallout 4 was uploaded to Nexus Mods a few weeks ago, and has already been downloaded thousands of times. The modification adds an abandoned town, some lakes, forests, and what the user describes as "a curse that needs to be broken." This suggests that The Wilderness may have something of an eerie vibe about it. There's also a 20-minute video showing what the mod looks and plays like. The video shows off plenty of gameplay from the mod and looks fantastic.

While at a surface level, it doesn't look dissimilar to the vanilla game, it has some interesting set pieces and a fairly large quest to complete. It's not in the same vein as the Fallout 4: London mod which aims to bring the famous UK capital to the post-apocalyptic world, but that doesn't mean that the user, who goes by El Ha on Nexus Mods, hasn't done an incredible job adding to the universe. What's impressive is they have done something which not many others have thought of, giving the game a perhaps much-needed horror atmosphere.

The Wilderness also adds some new weapons to Fallout, as well as new armor and some new music as well. Given that the developer says this mod is intended for survivalist players, this could be one of those Fallout 4 add-ons that turn it into a much better survival game. Many hardcore players may be intrigued by this concept, as some might find the vanilla game can be a bit easy at times.

Of course, this isn't the first mod to add a horror element to the game. Back in 2017, a fan created a mod that was inspired by the horror film The Witch. This suggests that there are ample opportunities for users to create spooky-themed mods for the Fallout universe. It remains to be seen whether anyone will have the guts to create something that combines Fallout 4 with, say, Outlast.

Fallout 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
