DuckTales is one of the most beloved NES platformers from the 80s, as Capcom took inspiration from the iconic cartoon and turned it into a high quality game. The title is still adored by many fans to this day, so much so that Capcom released a remake, DuckTales Remastered, back in 2013. However, the original release is still hiding its secrets, as a brand new song has been discovered in a recently found prototype of the game.
An earlier build of DuckTales has been found by the Cutting Room Floor, a site that compiles unused or cut content from video games over the years. Within this build, a brand new music track has been discovered, among a few other minor changes. This track would have played on the game's map screen, but it was replaced by a different track in the final release for unknown reasons. Nonetheless, the song sounds as fantastic as the rest of the game's music.

The original DuckTales NES game was composed by Hiroshige Tonomura, and it is often considered a landmark of early gaming soundtracks. While the Moon theme is the most iconic of the bunch, the rest of the music is catchy and memorable as well, and this brand new map theme is no exception. While not as relaxing as the original Stage Select screen's track, this version has its own upbeat and chipper attitude that is just as delightful in its own way.
The Capcom-developed Disney Afternoon games are often considered to be up there in quality with other NES mainstay franchises such as Mega Man and Castlevania. To learn something new about one of those titles in 2021 is rewarding both for long-time fans and video game preservationists. It's not often that the community gets some developmental insight on such a foundational title. Only time will tell if similar prototypes resurface for other beloved releases such as Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck, which would time well with the Darkwing Duck reboot on the horizon.
As great as the Disney Afternoon series is, it is a shame that none of those titles have released on Nintendo Switch. The Disney Afternoon Legacy Collection released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017, but was absent on any Nintendo consoles. Likewise, DuckTales Remastered is available on PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Xbox One, among others, but it is not available on any current generation consoles. At the very least, fans can savor this brand new cut content from the original release in the meantime.
