New World, the upcoming MMORPG from Amazon Games, is currently in closed beta. New World is set on a fictional island modeled after colonial America in the mid-1600s. Players will forage, craft, and fight to build a new life on Aeternum Island.
As the game is set in the mid-1600s, gunpowder is an essential ingredient in the combat system. Players from all New World factions can use Muskets to deal extremely high damage at range, though with a long reload time. The other downside of Muskets is that players must craft ammunition in the form of Cartridges, which can be quite complicated.

Before players in New World can begin crafting Cartridges, they'll first need to make Gunpowder. Gunpowder is created 10 at a time, using 10 Charcoal, 5 Flint, and 1 Fire Mote. Players will need to combine these ingredients at a Workshop, which is marked with the crossed arrow and rifle symbol. Here's how to gather the necessary ingredients:
- 10 x Charcoal: Green Wood harvested from trees can be refined into Charcoal at a Tier 2 Smelter.
- 5 x Flint: Flint is simply found on the ground, most often along coastlines.
- 1 x Fire Mote: Fire Motes can be harvested from Dragonglory flowers or recovered from salvaged magical items.
Making Gunpowder is only the first step to using a Musket in New World's combat system; next, players will need to craft bullets.
Once players have crafted Gunpowder in New World, it's time to make the actual bullets. These are known as Iron Cartridges and are made in groups of 25. To make 25 Iron Cartridges at a Workshop, players will need to combine 5 Gunpowder, 5 New World Iron Ingots, and 5 Linen.
- 5 x Iron Ingot: Iron Ingots are refined at a Tier 2 Smelter using Iron Ore which can be mined from Iron Deposits.
- 5 x Linen: Linen is made by weaving at a Tier 2 Loom, using Hemp Fiber harvested from New World's Hemp plants.
Once they've gathered the correct ingredients, players will be able to combine them into Cartridges at any Workshop. These bullets can only be used in Muskets, so players will need to make sure they've got the correct skills. Musket damage scales mostly with Dexterity but is also affected by Intelligence. There are two Musket skill trees in New World: the Sharpshooter and the Trapper. Whichever players choose, they'll have to aim carefully to preserve their limited bullets.
New World is scheduled to be released on August 31 for PC.
