Destiny 2: Bungie Could Use Warmind Cells to Make Gambit More Fun

Yesterday, a Destiny 2 video showcased a player using Warmind Cells in a creative way, sparking a debate on the game mode's future.

Despite the success of Destiny 2, which is likely due to an abundance of content for new players and constant additions for veterans, players have complained that a certain area needs more attention. A great time to do it would probably be the launch of The Witch Queen expansion in February 2022, with the area needing improvement the most being related to PVP and Gambit because of the former's lack of new maps and the latter becoming more of a chore than something fun. However, the DestinyNews+ Twitter account shared the short video of a player killing a blocker in Gambit and spawning a Warmind Cell, which is then picked up by the Guardian seconds prior to an invasion. The Cell is then thrown in the middle of the enemy map and destroyed, killing 2 opponents.

Many Destiny 2 players reacted, either surprised or entertained by the player's idea to use Warmind Cells in a fun and intelligent way, and that shows how little could make Gambit much better than it is now. Not long ago, Bungie confirmed that Gambit will receive some changes further down the line, but there is currently no indication of when this will happen nor what will be changed or added to the game mode. Warmind Cells have had an increasingly crucial role in all PVE activities in Destiny 2 ever since their introduction, but they cannot be created in the Crucible, which means that the glorious explosion happening in the aforementioned video cannot be witnessed in PVP.

Normally, Warmind Cells can't be interacted with except for dealing damage to them in order to trigger the explosion, but with the mod used by the player in the Gambit video, it's possible to grab and carry a Cell around to eventually throw it. That specific mod is called Grasp of the Warmind, and it doesn't see much use in general, whereas it does spice things up a bit with the Warmind Cells playstyle. Regardless of how fun the interaction with Warmind Cells and Grasp of the Warmind in Gambit might be, this is not exactly a solution to Gambit's problems, but it could point in the right direction.

Something that many Destiny 2 veterans will remember and newer players might have heard about is the infamous 'laser tag weekend' that happened in Year 1, back when the Exotic trace rifle Prometheus Lens came out in a broken state. Gambit was not a thing yet at the time, and this only occurred in the Crucible, but the gun was dealing massive amounts of damage and Bungie made it available as the weekly Exotic weapon from Xur, so everybody had it. Because of how memorable that small event turned out to be, even if it was generated by a bug and Bungie being receptive to memes, is not too dissimilar from the video in Gambit.

This could translate into occasional events that change the way Gambit is played, maybe adding the opportunity to spawn Warmind Cells and interact with them as having all of the related mods over a weekend. This could make things more lighthearted and remove the chore aspect out of them, and it would also be in line with what Bungie wants to do with Gambit and the Crucible next Season, which is to remove the victory streak for more points and, instead, adding an activity streak.

What Gambit needs, apart from better mechanics, bug fixes, and new maps, is to become the entertaining activity that it was meant to be all along, with something unique to look forward to for both PvE and PvP players. Ultimately, Destiny 2 will keep and changing, and here's to hoping that Gambit will do the same, but for the better.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
