The first teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s Army of Thieves has arrived and puts the safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by actor Matthias Schweighöfer, front, and center. The prequel to Army of the Dead premieres on Netflix later this year, and the sneak peek of the upcoming film, along with an official poster, were revealed during the Comic-Con @Home panel, which many of the film's cast and crew were a part of.
The minute-long teaser shows Dieter being recruited to be a part of a team of thieves by Nathalie Emmanuel’s Gwendoline. They are planning a heist on several “impossible-to-crack safes across Europe” and require Dieter's expertise. It has been revealed by producer Snyder previously that the upcoming film will have fewer zombies than Army of the Dead, however, they will be an integral part of the project.

The teaser refers to the outbreak that turns people into “flesh-eating monsters,” which the thieves plan to use as a distraction. This instantly connects to the prequel film Army of the Dead, which had a team of thieves enter zombie-filled Las Vegas for an extremely risky heist. There are several fancy shots of vehicles used during the heist in the Army of Thieves teaser, which are reminiscent of the Fast and the Furious franchise. But, the main focus is on cracking the code and entering the secure safes, and living “a life less ordinary.”
Dieter was one of the most popular characters in Army of the Dead and it is no wonder that he is the chosen one to be the protagonist of the upcoming prequel film. Schweighöfer has also stepped into the director’s chair for this project, with Snyder writing the story and producing the film. At the virtual Comic-Con panel, Snyder revealed that the film will be a love story between Dieter and Gwendoline and is a completely different genre than Army of the Dead.
The teaser does not feature many shots of the undead, which confirms the fact that it will be more of a heist film, with comic undertones, rather than one that focuses on the zombie apocalypse. Another thing the teaser confirms is that the film will be filled with action, as there are several shots of gunfire and car chases. This film is just one of the several projects related to Army of the Dead. The franchise will also be getting an animated series, titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and Snyder has confirmed that a sequel is also in development.
Army of Thieves premieres on Netflix this fall.
