As the release date for Madden NFL 22 approaches, the first player to receive the distinction of entering the 99 overall club is revealed.

The highest rating a player can receive in Madden NFL 22 is 99. The distinction is reserved for the select few players that are considered the absolute best at each position. Now, Madden NFL 22 has revealed its first choice for a 99 overall player.

While Madden NFL 22 is breaking tradition with its cover, it will be following the same old rules when it comes to the 99 overall club. This means that there will be a very small amount of players chosen for the honors. For perspective, Madden NFL 21 wrapped up with only 6 players holding a 99 overall rating.

Just recently, Madden NFL 22's official Twitter shared a video of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams being presented with his 99 overall rating. In the short clip, an unsuspecting Adams is playing a round of golf when he is given a box containing a few celebratory gifts for the occasion. Within the box is a card that was hand-signed by John Madden and a gaudy golden chain that reads "99" on the pendant. Despite boasting a stellar season last year, it's likely that there are a few other wide receivers that fans may want to watch to join Adams in the 99 club.

Surprisingly, Davante Adams started as a 94 overall in Madden NFL 21 but quickly rose to the 99 club after almost matching his career-high receiving yards and eclipsing his career-high touchdown record. His career-high 18 touchdowns last year put Adams at the top of the whole league, and his 1374 receiving yards slotted him comfortably in fifth place among his peers. The combination of these two factors meant that Adams was among one of the most improved wide receivers in Madden NFL 21, and helped him snag the coveted 99 rating. A quick glance at last year's stats reveals a few other candidates for the 99 club like Tyreek Hill, who posted similar numbers on considerably fewer receptions.

Still, Adams's Green Bay Packers may be in a bit of jeopardy, as talks with quarterback Aaron Rodgers have broken down multiple times over the summer with Rodgers desperate to be traded. Despite simulations suggesting the Packers would be better off without Rodgers, losing one of the consensus best quarterbacks in the league would be a major hurdle to overcome for any organization. Luckily for Packers fans, sources close to Rodgers are now suggesting that he plans to return to the team. A situation that bodes well for the first confirmed member of the 99 club.

Madden NFL 22 is scheduled to release on August 20 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
