A Resident Evil 3: Remake fan uploads a mod which makes the game extremely difficult, but still fair, by adding new enemies with enhanced AI.

When it comes to survival horror games like Resident Evil, some fans aren't satisfied with playing on easy, normal, or even hard difficulties. Take the deluxe edition of Resident Evil Village that adds a max difficulty, which provides new enemy spawns that are stronger, as well as new boss moves. Now, a fan of the remake of RE3 is attempting to up the ante by creating a mod for the game that aims to make it as difficult as possible.

Uploading the mod to Nexus Mods a couple of days ago, user kteok promises that this add-on will make the new Resident Evil 3 extremely hard, but also says that it will maintain fairness in the game, while also tweaking some of the graphics and gameplay mechanics. Called Doomed City, this mod is currently in a demo state, but it has a few tricks up its sleeves to increase the difficulty for fans who want a more hardcore challenge.

One of the ways the modder has achieved this is by enhancing the AI of the enemies, which they say makes them about 30% more difficult than in Inferno Mode which is RE3's hardest difficulty in the base game. As well as harder enemies, Doomed City also adds new antagonists, increased damage from enemy hits, which the mod's description says will kill the player in three hits in Assisted Mode, as well as new drops for Nemesis. There's also reduced weapon firepower, which presumably means it will take more bullets to kill enemies.

Not wishing to end it there, kteok has also added new skins for both Carlos and Jill, which gives them a rotten, zombie-like look. It's not quite the mod which turns Jill into a literal sandwich, but it's perhaps keeping within the theme of making sure the mod is harrowing. One thing the user does warn about is the requirement to play the demo on Assisted Mode first. The reason for this, the page says, is the mod may be unfair as players won't start with CQBR assault rifle. This is something they say they want to change for the final version.

Despite its short length, the remake of Resident Evil 3 is still an appealing installment for those who want a survival horror fix. While there are plenty of mods out there that swap out characters for ones from other franchises or tweak the game in some respect, kteok's contribution to the modding community increases the survival aspect of the survival horror.

Resident Evil 3: Remake is available now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
