In August's monthly update for Rust, players will have to learn how to survive underwater in order to collect the loot from the new labs.

Facepunch's Rust is all about doing what it takes to survive, and that often includes learning to adapt to new surroundings. While an important part of the game's core mechanics, the monthly addition of new content tends to shake up the way that the survivors in the wasteland participate. July's update to the game brought a wounded effect, allowing the occasional survivor of an encounter the opportunity to get away and live to fight another day. Rust's update in July also added DLSS support for Nvidia and a Voice Props DLC that allows players to properly antagonize their neighbors from further away.

While last month's Rust update introduced some new features and improvements to the game, it pales in comparison to what fans can expect from the next update expected to release on August 5th. It's not like they'll be left guessing either, as most of the update is currently live on the staging branch and some YouTubers have taken in-depth looks at what's coming in the aquatic-themed update. Turns out fans can expect everything from improved oceans, with sharks and actual fish, to underwater procedurally generated labs that can be easily accessed with the two new submarines coming this month.

For starters, the ocean will be getting much clearer as far as visibility goes. It seems that the post-apocalyptic island is doing well ecologically, and the water has cleared and begun to thrive in new ways. This includes new wildlife in Rust, including actual fish animations and a shark that currently has very low HP on the staging branch.

Players will be able to fish now, taking advantage of the improved wildlife. A fishing pole will now be a default blueprint and should help many starter players in Rust who have trouble finding food starting out. For those who become more experienced at the hobby, they can trade in their fish at a special vending machine at the fishing village to get scrap in exchange for whatever fish they had caught.

The underwater labs will be the first procedurally generated monuments in Rust that spawn per wipe on the map, meaning that each time the player visits one, it will be different from the one before it. They include a variety of tunnels, rooms, and multiple levels that the player can explore to look for loot. In addition to the standard loot, there will also be keycards, computer stations to view cameras in the lab, and some even have arcade machines and a bar.

It appears that these labs will largely be deep underwater and the only way to safely reach them will be with the subs that can be rented from the fishing village. The subs in Rust are built for solo or duo passengers and both are outfitted with rocket launchers that can fire the new surface or underwater torpedos. For players looking to try their luck at swimming to the underwater labs, they'll likely need the new speargun to combat any of the sharks or players they encounter on the way.

The new update is supposed to be coming on August 5th according to ShadowFrax, a popular Rust content creator. As one of the consistent updates brought monthly to players, it's easy to see why the game maintains nearly 100,000 concurrent players. This appears to be a large update and one that will have fans trying to kill each other underwater in no time.
