Rei and Asuka have been charming anime lovers since the 90s and this super realistic cosplay brings the best from classic Evangelion.

A quarter of a century after its original debut Neon Genesis Evangelion is back in the news thanks to the upcoming release of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, and that means plenty of spotlight for the anime’s cosplay darlings, Rei and Asuka.

The Rebuild of Evangelion brought an entirely new and expanded story to Hideki Anno’s masterpiece, and although the movie saga has never been met with the same universal acclaim, it definitely came with a considerable visual upgrade for more modern times. Rei and Asuka were among the few characters to get at least a couple touch-ups and slight redesigns, but nothing beats their classic Eva unit plugsuits.

For Danish cosplayers Rinaca and Su-rine that’s certainly the case as they teamed up for a photoshoot that captures the first and second children in their battle-ready outfits with impressive accuracy. Unlike most Evangelion cosplay tributes that usually feature spandex plugsuits, these two women went for full vinyl suits with some accessories that really make them look capable of achieving 100% synchronization to fight off any angels.

As if the work put into their costumes by Rinaca and Su-rine wasn’t enough, the duo really went the distance to add an entry plug-like cockpit to their photoshoot that perfectly compliments their pinpoint accurate plugsuits. Judging from the latest Rebuild of Evangelion trailer, Rei and Asuka will definitely be vital if the chosen children are to save the world again.

Evangelion easily ranks as one of the best anime from the 90s, with its highly philosophical plot always setting it apart from other legendary mecha anime, so perhaps that's why Amazon booked 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time for an exclusive worldwide premiere, that paired along with the rest of the Rebuild saga will make for a few good hours of entertainment this August 13. However, those looking to catch up with the entire Evangelion story will have to fall back on Netflix where the full anime found its home a couple of years ago after years of complicated licensing agreements.

The Rebuild film series features all Evangelion characters sticking to their decades-old personalities, though Rei did get a costume redesign and eyepatch Asuka has certainly lived through a lot. Regardless of that, when the world is upon a fourth or fifth impact, there’s really no rest for the weary, and 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time promises a noticeable improvement from its predecessors.
