Fandoms are a hotbed of passion and creativity, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the world of cosplay. Fanfiction might give it a run for its money, but sometimes it's difficult to sift through the countless well-written and extremely thirsty stories in search of those precious few family-friendly picks. So cosplay gets the attention for now, especially if it involves the recent hit series Loki.
Today's spotlight goes to Marvel's still hotly-discussed Disney Plus series Loki. A crafty and dedicated fan has put her talented fingers to work creating a replica of Sylvie's outfit from the show, and it's made entirely (almost) from scratch. The look of the now iconic variant was captured accurately and expertly, and the artist was even kind enough to share some progress pics of the whole process from fabric to fancy. Who says Mr. & Mrs. Smith should have a monopoly on looking good in action?

Reddit user dumbolddoor apparently decided her creativity was wasted on simply coming up with the best username ever and set to work on her Sylvie cosplay, capturing the look of the outfit worn by Sophia Di Martino's character by creating the whole ensemble basically from the ground up. Through the presumably painstaking process of, as she put it, "Combing over every scene and taking screen shots," dumbolddoor managed to encapsulate Sylvie's look with just a few basic building blocks. (Not literally, of course. Though it's entirely possible someone will make a Loki cosplay completely out of LEGO bricks at some point.)
Sylvie captured the hearts of fans everywhere almost immediately when she showed up on Loki. Both from Martino's stellar performance and the show's excellent writing behind the character, she quickly became a memorable addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, turning her dark yet dramatic look into an instantly recognizable image. Considering how many consider Sylvie and her story to be the best parts of Loki, it's frankly no surprise at all to see the fandom take such a shining to her in so many ways.
The progress pics linked by dumbolddoor in her original post's comments just go to show how much genuine effort was put into the cosplay. From the grid paper to the numerous reference photos scattered about her work area and then to the handcrafted costume pieces sewn and carved out from various textiles and foams, it's more clear than ever that cosplay is a legitimate art form. It almost seems like magic to see the original uncut pieces of cloth juxtaposed with the finished product, and that's even with the pre-made gloves, pants, and boots she used to complete the piece.
It's clear that dumbolddoor, like many of her peers, has a genuine affection for the source material behind her cosplay, and that's truly what makes fan creations so enjoyable. Marvel may be capable of mind-blowing visuals and effects, but there's still nothing like handcrafted and heartfelt artwork.
Loki season 1 is now available on Disney Plus.
