Communication is important when playing Minecraft online, but it comes with a few risks. Simply typing a message to friends while playing on a multiplayer server runs the risk of other players nearby also hearing it. This can be very detrimental if the player is talking about plans for where to hide their loot or something like that. In order to avoid this altogether, players should consider whispering to other players using the /tell command. This will send a message only to the specific recipients that the player specifies, allowing for conversation to happen away from prying eyes and eavesdropping ears.

Using the /tell command, Minecraft players can send private messages to one another. This can be done directly to a specific other player or to certain groups of players depending on the input. Players can even whisper to themselves as a reminder of some sort. Here's everything players need to know about the /tell command.

The syntax for this command is as follows: /tell . After typing the /tell command, players should enter in the name of the player they wish to message. Alternatively, they can also use one of Minecraft's built in target selectors to send a message to specific groups of people. The following target selectors can be used with the /tell command:

• @a - Sends the whisper to all players
• @p - Sends the whisper to the closest player
• @r - Sends the whisper to a random player
• @s - Sends the whisper to the player using the command

It's worth noting that the /tell command isn't the only way to go about whispering to other players. Both /msg and /w do the exact same thing and function the same way. Players will still input their target or one of the above target selectors followed by a space and then their message. When sending a message, it will appear like this to the other player: [Username] whispers to you: [Message]. Assuming everything is working correctly, no one else should be able to read the message but the person(s) specified as the target.

That's all there is to whispering in Minecraft. It's significantly easier to do with a keyboard rather than using a console's built in keyboard, so players that think they'll be whispering often should make sure they have one.
